New Balance Made in UK 991 v2

Despite my initial skepticism, these v. expensive sneakers are, in fact, worth it (at least for my feet). I only tried them b/c I found a pair steeply discounted at a Nordstrom Rack and liked the color (moss). I am not overly impressed by other NB (they are fine) but the 991v2s are great: comfortable, supportive, inoffensive to look at, and total tanks when it comes to long walks, outlasting many other sneakers defeated by the step count. They also aren't heinously heavy or bulky, making them a good option for trips.

I can’t really explain my excitement when I saw they re-released the Nike Waffle Racers. Growing up, I ran track and XC, had an obsession with Steve Prefontaine (as a young runner does), and thus, have always loved the waffle racer. To top it all off, my mom grew up running and coaching, so this was her shoe when she was little. It’s great, in every way. Tons of colors.

I needed new workout sneakers and bought these before doing the Great Saunter, a 32-mile walk around Manhattan’s shoreline (more on that here). They did good! 5 stars on Yelp! (Also, Nike has figured out a lace that doesn't untie.)

I grew up through my teens and 20s living in skate shoes. I love the flat soles,the comfort, and fit that comes with that type of shoe. Now this has been my go to shoe from the North face for a few yrs now. . It's got a Vibram sole that's quite flat with a good traction and works well with all the adventures. I'm not a clip shoe guy so I've biked in them, they are great for hiking, scrambling on rocks, disc golf, or just day-to-day life. These shoes rock.

This brand had a moment a few years ago and I respect them for not over-expanding, flaming out, doing too many things, etc. Most important: The shoes are quietly amazing. They look slightly weird and have no visible branding. They are comfortable, durable, and versatile. I’ve been on many trips where these were the only shoes I brought. Also important: The founder Sidra is amazing and deeply cares about making great shoes.

The Mercer Brand The Re-Run Drive Suede

These have a similar silhouette to the New Balance 204L, but the brushed suede gives them an elevated feel. They’d be a step up sartorially from my 530s, especially in the denim-inspired blue.
