1. Personal Information We Collect
We collect personal information in three ways: you give it to us, we record it as you use the Site and the Services, and a few third parties pass it to us. This section lists what each of those actually is.
Information you give us.
- Account details. Your email address, and a password if you set one. Your name, profile photo, and a short bio, if you add them.
- Your rec league profile. Its name, handle, description, logo, and colors; the city or region you choose to show; and links to your website and social accounts (Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Substack). If you ask us to verify a social link, we read that account's public profile page to check it points back to you.
- What you post. Recommendations, collections, requests and answers, comments, mailbag questions, images you upload, and messages you send in Rooms (which the other people in that room can see).
- Onboarding answers. The categories you say you want recommendations in. We use them to pick what to show you, including whether to favor, for example, menswear or womenswear.
- Phone number, if you verify one, so people who already have your number can find you and so we can send the one-time verification code.
- Contacts, if you choose to sync them from the app. We receive only scrambled (hashed) email addresses and phone numbers, never names, notes, or photos, and we delete hashes that are not re-synced within 90 days.
- Payment records. When you buy a membership or a collection, or subscribe to Premium, Stripe collects your card details and we never see your full card number. We keep a record of what you bought, when, and for how much.
- Patreon, if you connect it: your Patreon id, name, email, and membership status for the rec league you joined through it.
- Preferences. Your notification and email settings, your marketing-email choice, your analytics consent, and your preferred currency.
- Reports and support. Your name, email, and what you tell us when you report content (including through our report form, which works without an account) or write to support.
We do not ask for, and do not keep, your date of birth (the app checks that you are old enough to sign up but does not store the date), your race or ethnicity, religion, health information, sexual orientation, or similar characteristics, and we do not record calls or conversations.
Information we collect automatically.
When you use the Site or the app we record the device and browser or app version you use, your IP address, the pages and recommendations you view and tap, how long you spend, the page or site that sent you to us, and when you were active. We use your IP address to work out your country and to protect against abuse; for analytics we keep only a truncated or hashed form of it. The app also sends us crash and error reports so we can fix what broke. Section 5, Cookies and similar technologies, describes what we store in your browser, and Section 14 explains how people in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland choose whether the optional analytics run at all.
Information we get from others.
- Social accounts you link. The public profile page of an account you ask us to verify, read once to confirm the link.
- Stripe and Patreon. Whether a payment or membership succeeded, and the membership status for a rec league you support through Patreon.
- People who sync their contacts. If someone syncs contacts that include your hashed email or phone number, and you have turned on "Find me by email" or "Find me by phone number" in the app's settings, they learn that you are on Rec League. Nothing else is shared.
- People who report content. What a reporter tells us about something you posted.
Cookies.
We and some of our service providers use cookies and similar technologies, such as browser storage and web server logs, to collect some of this information. Section 5, Cookies and similar technologies, lists each cookie we use, who sets it, why, and for how long.
Google Analytics.
We may use Google Analytics to help analyze how users use the Site. Google Analytics uses Cookies to collect information such as how often users visit the Site, what pages they visit, and what other sites they used prior to coming to the Site. We use the information we get from Google Analytics only to improve our Site and the Services. Although Google Analytics plants a persistent Cookie on your web browser to identify you as a unique user the next time you visit the Site, the Cookie cannot be used by anyone but Google. Google's ability to use and share information collected by Google Analytics about your visits to the Site is restricted by the Google Analytics Terms of Use and the Google Privacy Policy.
Session Replay Technology.
We use Mixpanel, Inc. ("Mixpanel") to provide product analytics. We also use Mixpanel's session replay service for a sample of visits to the Site and the Services. This service allows us to record and replay certain interactions with the Site and the Services. This helps us understand how people experience the Site and the Services, where they might get stuck or confused, and how we can improve the experience. Mixpanel processes this information on our behalf. You can review Mixpanel's privacy statement at https://mixpanel.com/legal/privacy-policy/.
Additional Information.
If you choose to interact on the Site or through the Services (such as by registering; using our Services; entering into agreements with us; or requesting information from us), we will collect the personal information that you provide. We may collect personal information about you that you provide through telephone, email, or other communications. If you provide us with personal information regarding another individual, please do not do so unless you have that person's consent to give us their personal information.
2. How We Use Your Personal Information
Generally, we may use your personal information in the following ways and as otherwise described in this Privacy Policy or to you at the time we collect the personal information from you:
To Provide the Services and Personalize Your Experience.
We use personal information about you to provide the Services to you, including:
- To help establish and verify your identity;
- For the purposes for which you specifically provided it to us, including, without limitation, to enable us to process and fulfill your requests or provide the Services to you;
- To provide you with effective customer service;
- To provide you with a personalized experience when you use the Site or the Services or by delivering relevant Site or Services content;
- To send you information about your relationship or transactions with us;
- To otherwise contact you with information that we believe will be of interest to you, including marketing and promotional communications; and
- To enhance or develop features, products or services.
Research and development.
We may use your personal information for research and development purposes, including to analyze and improve the Services, our Sites and our business. As part of these activities, we may create aggregated, de-identified or other anonymous data from personal information we collect. We make personal information into anonymous data by removing information that makes the data personally identifiable to you. We may use this anonymous data and share it with third-parties for our lawful business purposes.
Marketing.
We may use your personal information in connection with sending you marketing communications as permitted by law, including by mail and email. You may opt-out of marketing communications by following the unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of our marketing communications, emailing us at support@recleague.com.
Compliance and protection.
We may use any of the categories of personal information described above to:
- Comply with applicable laws, lawful requests, and legal process, such as to respond to subpoenas or requests from government authorities.
- Protect our, your and others' rights, privacy, safety and property (including by making and defending legal claims).
- Audit our internal processes for compliance with legal and contractual requirements and internal policies.
- Enforce the terms and conditions that govern the Site and our Services.
- Prevent, identify, investigate and deter fraudulent, harmful, unauthorized, unethical or illegal activity, including cyberattacks and identity theft.
We may also use your personal information for other purposes consistent with this Privacy Policy or that are explained to you at the time of collection of your personal information.
3. How We Share Your Personal Information
We may disclose all categories of personal information described above with the following categories of third parties:
Affiliates.
We may share your personal information with our affiliates, for purposes consistent with this notice or that operate shared infrastructure, systems and technology.
Third Party Service Providers.
We may provide your personal information to third party service providers that help us provide you with the Services that we offer through the Site or otherwise, and to operate our business.
Professional Advisors.
We may provide your personal information to our lawyers, accountants, bankers and other outside professional advisors in the course of the services they provide to us.
Corporate Restructuring.
We may share some or all of your personal information in connection with or during negotiation of any merger, financing, acquisition or dissolution, transaction or proceeding involving the sale, transfer, divestiture, or disclosure of all or a portion of our business or assets. In the event of an insolvency, bankruptcy, or receivership, personal information may also be transferred as a business asset. If another company acquires Rec League, our business, or assets, that company will possess the personal information collected by us and will assume the rights and obligations regarding your personal information described in this Privacy Policy.
Other Disclosures.
Rec League may disclose your personal information if it believes in good faith that such disclosure is necessary for any of the following:
- In connection with a legal investigation;
- To comply with relevant laws or to respond to subpoenas or warrants served on Rec League;
- To protect or defend the rights or property of Rec League or users of the Site or Services; and/or
- To investigate or assist in preventing any violation or potential violation of the law, this Privacy Policy, or our terms of service/terms of use.
We may also share personal information with other categories of third parties with your consent or as described to you at the time of collection of your personal information.
Third Party Websites.
Our Site or the Services may contain links to third party websites or services. When you click on a link to any other website or location, you will leave our Site or the Services and go to another site and another entity may collect your personal information from you. We have no control over, do not review, and cannot be responsible for these outside websites or their content, or any collection of your personal information after you click on links to such outside websites. The links to third party websites or locations are for your convenience and do not signify our endorsement of such third parties or their products, content, websites or privacy practices.
4. Service providers that process personal information
We use the following service providers to run the Site and the Services. They process personal information on our behalf, under contracts that limit what they can do with it, except where we note that a provider acts under its own privacy policy. Below is what each one receives, grouped by purpose.
Hosting, storage, and delivery.
- Render. Runs our servers, background jobs, and database, so it stores all of the personal information described in this Policy.
- Cloudflare. Stores the images and files you upload (Cloudflare R2, served from lyric-images.com) and delivers our Site, so it processes your IP address and the requests your browser makes.
- Gumlet. Resizes and delivers images, so it receives the images we store and the IP address of the device that loads them.
Analytics and data warehousing.
- Mixpanel. Product analytics and session replay on the Site and in our apps. Receives the pages you view and actions you take, your device and browser details, a shortened version of your IP address with the last part removed (which Mixpanel uses to estimate your general location), a one-way hash of your IP address, your account identifier and email address if you are logged in, your delivery and open records for our emails, the text of any feedback you send us in the app, and recordings of a sample of visits.
- Google Analytics. Pages viewed and device and browser details, on certain marketing pages that are not part of the Rec League app.
- Snowflake and Estuary. Estuary copies our production database into our Snowflake data warehouse, which we use for internal analysis. Together they process a copy of the personal information in our database and of our analytics data.
Error and performance monitoring.
- Sentry. Error reports and performance data from the Site and our apps, including your IP address and device and browser details, and recordings of a sample of visits to the Site and of visits where an error occurs.
- New Relic. Performance data and logs from our servers, which can include account identifiers, IP addresses, and the addresses of pages requested.
Email, push notifications, and text messages.
- Mailgun. Your email address and the content of the emails we send you. Mailgun tells us whether each message was delivered, opened, or clicked (with an approximate location for opens and clicks), and checks whether an email address can receive mail when you sign up.
- OneSignal. Your account identifier, your device's push token, and the content of the push notifications we send you. OneSignal delivers them through Apple Push Notification service and Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google).
- Twilio. Your phone number, when you verify it, so Twilio Verify can send and check a one-time code.
Payments.
- Stripe. Your name, email address, payment card details, and purchase history when you pay for a membership or for Rec League Premium. Membership payments are processed through the creator's own Stripe account, so the creator also receives them. We do not receive or store your full card number.
Maps and location.
- Google Maps Platform. The location text you type into a location field, place names parsed from searches that mention a place, the place names and addresses linked from recommendations and profile locations (to find their map coordinates), and, when you view a map on the Site or in our Android app, your IP address.
- Apple Maps. Maps in our iOS app are drawn by Apple Maps on your device, so Apple receives the map areas you view under Apple's own privacy policy. We send Apple nothing.
- MaxMind GeoLite2. A database we keep on our own servers to look up the country of an IP address. No information is sent to MaxMind.
Search, recommendations, and artificial intelligence.
- Google (Gemini and Vertex AI). The text and images of recommendations, collections, profiles, and requests (including the curator's name), to create the representations that power search, feeds, and suggestions and to classify and organize posts; your searches and your messages to our chat assistant; the public bio and recent captions of social accounts linked to a Rec League profile, to summarize their interests; and content you import. When you sign up, we also send your name, email address, and country (which we estimate from your IP address) and, if you have a Rec League profile, its name, bio, and social and website links to Gemini with Google Search turned on, so Google may search the web for public information about you. We use the result to decide which new creators our team should reach out to and help.
- Google Custom Search. The text you type into the search box when adding a recommendation, and your answers to onboarding questions in our app, to find matching web pages.
- OpenAI. The text and images of recommendations (including the curator's name), to write short summaries and image descriptions that power search and feeds.
- Cohere. Your search queries and the text of the recommendations and collections that match them, to rank search results.
Social profile verification, link previews, and imports.
- Apify. The Instagram, TikTok, and Substack handles or links added to a Rec League profile. Apify fetches those public profiles (bio, recent public posts, and follower counts) so we can confirm the profile belongs to its owner and show the right details.
- Zyte and ScrapingBee. The web addresses of links in recommendations and of websites added to a profile, so they can fetch those pages for previews, images, prices, and link checks.
- Octogen. Product links from recommendations, to look up product details and images.
- Photoroom. Recommendation and product images, when you or an import ask us to remove an image's background.
- Google Safe Browsing. Links in recommendations, to check them for malware and phishing.
Internal alerts.
- Slack. Our team gets alerts in Slack. These include reports of content (the reason, the reported item's name, the first 50 characters of a reported comment, and a reported person's name or email address), the full text of feedback you send from the app with your name and profile link, new Rec League profiles and sign-ups (name, email address, and profile and social links), and some account, payment, and safety alerts that can include a name or email address.
Integrations you choose to use.
- Patreon. If you connect or log in with Patreon, we receive your Patreon name, email address, profile image, and campaign details, and, for creators, the names, email addresses, and membership status of their patrons so those patrons can access members-only posts.
- ShopMy. If you import from ShopMy, the ShopMy username or collection you choose, to fetch those products.
- Instagram and other share targets. When you share to Instagram or another app, your device hands the content to that app directly. We send it nothing.
5. Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small data files that a website stores in your browser. Some of the tools we use work the same way but keep their data in your browser's local or session storage instead of a cookie. We treat those the same as cookies in this section.
Strictly necessary cookies keep you logged in, remember your settings, and protect payments. We set them without asking, because the Site does not work properly without them.
Analytics cookies and session replay help us understand how people use the Site. If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we show you a cookie banner, and analytics cookies and session replay run only after you accept. You can change your choice at any time from the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of every page. In our iOS and Android apps, the same choice is the analytics prompt you see the first time you open the app, and you can change it later with the analytics setting in the app's Settings. We also honor Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals for analytics that runs in your browser (see Section 11).
You can also set your browser to block or delete cookies. If you block strictly necessary cookies, parts of the Site, such as logging in, will not work. For more about managing cookies, visit https://www.allaboutcookies.org/.

6. Your Choices Regarding Your Personal Information
You have several choices regarding the use of your personal information on the Site and our Services:
Email Communications.
We may periodically send you free newsletters and e-mails that directly promote the use of our Site or the Services. When you receive newsletters or promotional communications from us, you may indicate a preference to stop receiving further communications from us and you will have the opportunity to "opt-out" by following the unsubscribe instructions provided in the e-mail you receive or by contacting us directly (please see contact information below). Despite your indicated e-mail preferences, we may send you Services-related communications, including notices of any updates to our Privacy Policy or terms of service/terms of use.
Cookies.
Your choices about cookies, analytics, and session replay, including the cookie banner, the "Cookie settings" link, and the analytics setting in our apps, are described in Section 5, Cookies and similar technologies.
Session Replay Technology.
For information about using Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals for browser-based analytics and session replay, see Section 11.
7. Security Of Your Personal Information
Rec League is committed to protecting the security of your personal information. We use a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. No method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure, however. Therefore, while Rec League uses reasonable efforts to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
8. How long we keep personal information
We keep personal information for as long as your account is open and as long as we need it for the purposes described in this Policy, and then delete it. Some specific periods:
- Login sessions. A login on the Site lasts until you have not visited for 90 days, and each visit extends it. A login in our iOS or Android app lasts up to 365 days. Logging out ends the session sooner.
- Contacts you sync from your phone. We store only one-way hashes of the email addresses and phone numbers in your address book, never the names or the addresses and numbers themselves. Each sync replaces the previous one, and hashes you have not synced again within 90 days are deleted. You can delete them sooner from the app's settings.
- Feed ranking records. Records of which recommendations we considered for your feed and which ones we showed you are deleted from our production database after 14 to 120 days, depending on the record type (14 days for candidate records, 30 days for ranking records, and 120 days for records of what was shown).
- Email delivery records. Mailgun keeps logs of the emails we send you (including your email address and whether a message was delivered, opened, or clicked) for a limited period under its own retention policy, and deletes them after that.
- Error reports and session replays. Sentry keeps error reports and session replays only for its own retention period, and then deletes them.
When you delete your account, we permanently delete your account and the personal information associated with it from our production database (rather than hiding it). At the same time, we ask Mixpanel to delete the analytics events and profile tied to your account, ask OneSignal to delete your push notification registration, and ask Stripe to delete your customer records. Stripe keeps records of past charges and invoices, as it and we are required to for tax and accounting purposes. Mailgun and Sentry keep what they hold only until their own retention periods end.
We copy our production database into a data warehouse for analysis. When a record is deleted from our production database, the warehouse copy is marked as deleted rather than removed, so the warehouse retains a historical copy of deleted records, including records deleted when an account is closed. We use these historical records for internal analysis and to improve the Services, and we do not use them to contact you or restore your account.
We may keep some information for longer where the law requires it, to resolve disputes, to enforce our agreements, or to prevent fraud and abuse.
9. International Users
Rec League is operated from the United States, and our Site and the Services are hosted there. If you use our Site or our Services from outside the United States, your personal information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, and some of the service providers listed in Section 4 may process it in other countries where they or their subprocessors operate. The data protection and privacy laws of the United States may differ from the laws in your country.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we transfer your personal information to the United States (and to any other country that does not have an adequacy decision) using one of the following safeguards:
- Where the recipient is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, the UK Extension to the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, or the Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, as applicable, we rely on that certification.
- Otherwise, we rely on the Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission and, for transfers from the United Kingdom, the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to those clauses (with the changes Swiss law requires for transfers from Switzerland).
You can ask for a copy of the safeguards that apply to your personal information by emailing us at support@recleague.com. We may redact commercial terms that are not relevant to the protection of your personal information.
10. Children
Our Site and the Services are not intended for children under 18 years of age, and you must be at least 18 years old to have our permission to use the Site or the Services. We do not knowingly collect, use, or disclose personally identifiable information from children under 13. If you believe that we have collected, used, or disclosed personally identifiable information of a child under the age of 13, please contact us using the contact information below so that we can take appropriate action.
11. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
When we detect a Do Not Track ("DNT") or Global Privacy Control ("GPC") signal, we do not load Mixpanel's analytics and session replay code in your browser. Because detection and transmission of these signals depend on your browser, device, and configuration, we cannot guarantee that a signal will always be detected. Our response to DNT and GPC applies to analytics that runs in your browser. It does not change the records our servers keep when they respond to your requests, which are described in Section 1.
12. Updates To This Privacy Policy
We reserve the right to change this Privacy Policy at any time. If we make any material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will post the revised version to our website and update the "Effective Date" at the top of this Privacy Policy. Except as otherwise indicated, any changes will become effective when we post the revised Privacy Policy on our website.
13. California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to request that we disclose certain information about our collection and use of your personal information over the past 12 months. You also have the right to request that we delete any personal information that we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions. To make such requests, please contact us using the contact information provided below.
We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA rights, such as by denying you goods or services, charging you a different price, or providing you with a different level or quality of goods or services. For purposes of compliance with the CCPA, in the preceding 12 months, we have not sold any personal information. We do not sell personal information without affirmative authorization.
14. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA), you have certain rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regarding the collection, use, and retention of your personal data (which, as defined in the GDPR, means any information related to an identified or identifiable natural person). If you are in the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you have the same rights under the UK GDPR and the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP), and everything in this section applies to you in the same way.
You have the right to access, correct, update, or delete any personal data we hold about you. You may also have the right to restrict or object to our processing of your personal data or to request that we provide a copy of your personal data to you or another controller. To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the contact information provided below. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority if you believe that our processing of your personal data violates applicable law.
We may collect, use, and retain your personal data for the purposes of providing the Services to you and for other legitimate business purposes. Your personal data is transferred to and processed in the United States. Section 9, International Users, explains the safeguards we rely on for those transfers, and Section 8, How long we keep personal information, explains how long we keep it.
Our legal basis for collecting and processing your personal data is typically based on your consent or our legitimate business interests. If you are in the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we rely on your consent for the analytics cookies and session replay described in Section 5, and you can withdraw that consent at any time. In certain cases, we may also have a legal obligation to collect and process your personal data or may need to do so to perform services for you.
If you have any questions or concerns about our privacy practices, please contact us using the contact information provided below.
