Watched this on Le Cinema Club and loved it. Maybe a mental association because this film is directed by Michael Roemer, but the aesthetic actually reminds of Rohmer films (but the drama is very American)?? New England summer in all its glory. Brooke Adams is great in this

An intellectual (and surprisingly fun!) action movie. Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx have great chemistry and though there is some early 2000s cheese I really enjoyed this

I am obsessed with this movie. It's about how Kumail Nanjiani met his wife, Emily, played by Zoe Kazan. Has all the things: funny, heartwarming, immigrant family stuff, romcom vibes, absolutely perfect ending and needle drop. I cry every time! (As a sidebar, did anyone else obsessively listen to the podcast that Kumail and Emily did together during COVID??)

In the Mood for Love who??? PSA: more people need to be talking about this movie, which I just watched for the first time and liked significantly more than the other two films in this trilogy. Sexy and emotional, but also funny and a little weird. For anyone who watched In the Mood for Love and thought “yes this is gorgeous but why is everything so serious”

Despite finding 3 out of the 4 characters (yes all of the male ones) completely intolerable, I was reeled in by this slow, sensual movie. Feels like a long summer crush

Not the dance movie!! Saw this at Film Forum on a hot Saturday afternoon and the 4K restoration is so beautiful. Also young Maggie Cheung is everything. Of the Hong Kong new wave movies I've seen, this one is my favorite so far. Vibey and restrained, but also more experimental in a way that really works

A delight. Funniest movie I've seen this year but moving too. Willem Dafoe, Greta Lee and Edward Donovan (who is new to me and I hope is in more stuff going forward??) are all great in this. See it at Film Forum and buy the short story on your way out!

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I’m not usually a big comedy person but I’ve rewatched Forgetting Sarah Marshall so many times. Everyone in the cast is charming and there’s just something about the scene where Jason Segel plays “Peter You Suck” to himself on the piano that lives rent free in my head

Pauline at the Beach

The languid summer vibes and young Amanda Langlet is so good and enigmatic as Pauline. There comes a time about 2/3 through a Rohmer movie where I become convinced he is too high on his own supply, but the ending always brings it back. I love these simple stories and the aesthetic

Saw Remake at Film Forum and immediately 1) went home and bought a Film Forum membership and 2) came back to see Sherman’s March later in the week. Really love his soft, voyeuristic filmmaking style and the curiosity / lack of direction in his movies’ narratives. He blurs storytelling and reality well
