Breakfast at Corner Bar
•••
I did a staycation at Nine Orchard and ended up having breakfast at Corner Bar both days since it was included as part of my stay. Like most Fancy Boutique/Luxury Hotel Breakfast, a morning meal here will somehow cost you $40-50, which is crazy BUT if you're staying here/expensing it/just balling out for whatever reason, Corner Bar punches way above its weight as far as quality is concerned. I loved sitting at the quiet outdoor tables and having my grapefruit juice and coffee (they have Devocion!) while listening to the neighborhood wake up, then tucking into breakfast. The granola here is soooo good and they have found the tenderest, freshest berries to adorn their Greek yogurt (the epidemic of tasteless hotel fruit is real). I was also really pleased by the eggs and chicken sausage I got on the other day! tl;dr eating breakfast here actually feels like a luxury which is NOT TRUE for many other hotel breakfasts in this price range, I was impressed!!

Nine Orchard
•••
I did a staycation at Nine Orchard and had the best time. Your mileage may vary depending on how much you care for Dimes Square/the Lower East Side, but I think the location is excellent if you lean into the neighborhood. Lots of great shops and restaurants around, Metrograph is around the corner and you can walk most to places below Delancey in under 20 minutes. I was also really impressed by the room (chic and quiet, also surprisingly spacious???) and the service

The Iliad
•••
Long time Greek mythology nerd but my first time reading the Iliad (I had to read the Aeneid in Latin in high school and it really burned me out on classics…). Loved Emily Wilson’s translation and the notes and intro especially are great. I am mostly pro-Kindle for bigger books but recommend getting a physical copy of this one to be able to flip back and forth between the notes, glossary, etc.! Reading an epic poem was challenging for me (beautiful prose but doesn’t always keep my attention the way a novel does, especially on book 17 of an endless battle) but also rewarding and I felt like I learned so much.

No longer impossible to get in! I do still find the plastic stools here very gimmicky but the food was great. Love their fried tofu (which they make in house), the eggplant, the clam and wood ear salad and the blood sausage. Want to come back in the winter for pho! Adventurous eaters only

Dimes Deli macro bowl
•••
The sort of thing you could just make yourself except it actually takes like 4 hours to meal prep all the components. Always comes with kimchi, sweet potato purée and brown rice (and I add chicken), as well as some rotating seasonal veg. This version had marinated beets, roasted zucchini and leeks. The best

Andy Warhol’s Family Album, on view at the Whitney
•••
I am generally underwhelmed by Warhol’s work but I found myself surprisingly moved by this tiny exhibit which features 700+ Polaroids from one of his photo albums, taken between 1972 and 1973. Intimate and personal. On view until October!

Baked feta pasta with zucchini and leeks
•••
The TikTok baked feta cherry tomato pasta recipe is a mainstay in my meal prep rotation, but I tried this version with zucchini, leeks and onion and maybe like it better?? Virtually foolproof, as I used different quantities of literally all the ingredients based on what I had in the fridge. Also when I was making this, my neighbor texted our building group chat “whoever is cooking on the 4th floor it smells incredible”

Give me a recipe that uses a full 2.5lbs of zucchini!! (My CSA has a LOT of squash, which is both a blessing and a curse.) This recipe is easy and delicious and only has like 6 ingredients. You cook onion and zucchini low and slow in an herby olive oil, then add chickpeas. Also good for using up half a basil plant!

Priya Parker’s interview on The Daily
•••
Priya is a writer and conflict facilitator and was on the Daily to talk about healthy conflict & its role in relationships/her upcoming book, The Art of Fighting. The NYT interviewer sounds like he needs some conflict help himself lol but Priya gives very good, practical advice on conflict in various types of relationships (work, family, with a partner, etc) and I am preordering her book!

In the Mood for Love who??? PSA: more people need to be talking about this movie, which I just watched for the first time and liked significantly more than the other two films in this trilogy. Sexy and emotional, but also funny and a little weird. For anyone who watched In the Mood for Love and thought “yes this is gorgeous but why is everything so serious”

Peach ice cream 🍑 from Perfect Scoop in Avon-by-the-Sea
•••
Peach is my favorite small town ice cream flavor (I think from all the peach soft serve I ate at IKEA as a child, does anyone else remember this???). Slightly artificial in the best way and I love the chewy dehydrated peach chunks. And forever tied to summer for me because this flavor is too pedestrian for NYC and I can only find it when I escape the city 🥲

Not the dance movie!! Saw this at Film Forum on a hot Saturday afternoon and the 4K restoration is so beautiful. Also young Maggie Cheung is everything. Of the Hong Kong new wave movies I've seen, this one is my favorite so far. Vibey and restrained, but also more experimental in a way that really works

Relistening to boygenius
•••
I first discovered boygenius through a peripheral interest in Phoebe Bridgers, but in ensuing years have deepdived into all three of their discographies separately (and have seen Julien and Lucy live a few times!! Phoebe, I'm coming for you eventually). In anticipation of Phoebe's new album coming out tomorrow, I've been listening to old boygenius albums for the first time in a while and feel like I'm hearing all the tracks with fresh ears from being more familiar with each of the boys' solo work. Adds another layer to the listening experience, but also I forgot how much I genuinely loved boygenius (the experience of their rabid fandom tainted my memory of their music, because it was...a lot)! The albums are short and sweet but so good

Alison Roman’s zucchini pasta salad
•••
I’ve made & loved all of Alison Roman’s pasta salad recipes as they are high on fresh veg and texture/flavor and lower on pasta, but this one is my favorite. Very open to riffing!! This time I subbed the scallion for garlic chives and shallots because that’s what I had in the house and doubled the zucchini, it was still perfect

New seasonal flavor! Subtle and not too sweet. I’m obsessed with corn desserts so I sort of wish this was more corn-forward but they blueberry is perfect. I also really like the texture, which is almost more ice-y than soft serve-y
