McAtlas

A global tour of various McDonald’s locations and their special menu items + some fun history of the brand, and the book looks like an ACTUAL BURGER. Beautiful photography and every time I travel somewhere new I flip to that country’s section of this book to read about the McDonald’s there lol

Funnier and sharper than I expected, sort of like an 1860s Sicilian Arrested Development

Other People We Married by Emma Straub
•••
I picked this up off a stoop a few days ago and have been really enjoying it?? I’ve read a few of Emma Straub’s other books before and can’t remember literally anything about them (sorry Emma) but these short stories have been so absorbing. The characters and their relationships to each other are surprisingly vivid, and I’ve found myself both craving more and being very satisfied at the end of each story

The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis

Unhinged, indulgent and great at building tension. I read this when I was in California this summer and could not put it down

The Iliad
•••
Long time Greek mythology nerd but my first time reading the Iliad (I had to read the Aeneid in Latin in high school and it really burned me out on classics…). Loved Emily Wilson’s translation and the notes and intro especially are great. I am mostly pro-Kindle for bigger books but recommend getting a physical copy of this one to be able to flip back and forth between the notes, glossary, etc.! Reading an epic poem was challenging for me (beautiful prose but doesn’t always keep my attention the way a novel does, especially on book 17 of an endless battle) but also rewarding and I felt like I learned so much.

The Lonely City by Olivia Laing
•••
Tbh this book was not what I thought it was going to be about (flaneuring through New York) and it took me a second to adjust to that, but I ended up enjoying it for what it was, which is an exploration of loneliness and contemporary artists whose work and life reflect aspects of loneliness. Also made me really want to see more work by the artists featured IRL, so I am off to the Whitney soon

Late Fame by Arthur Schnitlzer

Did you know the original Late Fame was set in 1900s Vienna? Short and sharp little novella, fun it its own right but extra good after watching the movie

In the City by Joan Silber
•••
Ate this up in 36 hours en route to/at the beach. Recently rediscovered and republished by Hagfish Books! Set in 1920s New York, and portrays a young woman (Pauline) figuring out her 20s “in the city” with all the conflicting and complicated emotions that entails

Workhorse by Caroline Palmer, on vacation
•••
Is there anything better than plunging headfirst into a novel on vacation? Read the first 150 pages of this in one go before reluctantly going to bed. This book has all my favorite things: morally compromised protagonist, mysterious and beguiling supporting characters with intense but undefined relationships, very specific details to draw you back to early 2000s New York, and the subtle tension of a thriller

The Director by Daniel Kehlmann
•••
Made me want to read everything else Daniel Kehlmann has written and also rewatch Zone of Interest. Super dark and horrifying but written with the lightest touch and so, so funny. Also I learned a lot!!
