This is year 3 of my wild front yard. Best decision I’ve ever made. It makes me, the birds and the bees happy everyday. Ask your city if they have a program to underwrite switching to a water-wise yard. That’s what I did!
i love weeping willows
The GOAT (don’t be fooled by this photo—every bloom is different, in a range of dusty colors from pale pink to light brown).
Core childhood memory is doing jumps through this
Made in the USA. When gardening turns into yard work, these are the best! Buttery smooth, yet thorn-resistant, and they fit like a dream. For more than 40 years, Womanswork, a woman-owned business, has been crafting high-quality, heritage-style gloves designed for women who work with their hands, rather than simply downsizing men's products.
New Englanders and temperate gardeners zones 5—9, now is the time of year to order your thalictrum, the most beautiful airy perennial you could add to borders. Lacy foliage pleasing in its own right sends up slender stalks covered in clouds of tiny fuzzy bells in shade of cream and pink to soft mauve.
World-class, family-run farm for all your bearded iris needs. Plan a visit next time you’re in Oregon in the springtime. And place your bulb orders now!
in anticipation of this weekend’s herb walk with @Louise Buckley and @Londyn Harris, behold my favorite plant (not an herb, sorry). one of the best parts of living in socal is the abundance of california sagebrush, known to many as “cowboy cologne.” snag a twig, rub it between your fingers, and bask in one of the best smells on earth. So many candles and perfumes try to capture its essence, but none get it quite right.
much more low-maintenance than i expected. people have said that about me before. i have a few of these babies, and one has grown from my ceiling down to the floor (!!) it's so long and luscious i'm so proud of myself for keeping it alive all these years! they seem to thrive on living indoors by the window without direct sun & i water them whenever they start looking a bit sad.
Every Italian in Brooklyn needs a fig tree
This shade loving vine grows like a weed, and once a year you get showered in beautiful chocolate blossoms. Perfection.
Stinzenplanten is a Dutch gardening power move involving planting grass lawns with scattered groupings of naturalizing spring bulbs like crocus, snowdrops, and bluebells. Over time, the lawn transforms into a carpet of early spring blooms (they eventually die back). It is such a delight; a few years ago, I ordered a boatload of bulbs from Van Engelen/John Scheepers for my scruffy little front yard, and now, every March, it is a delicate wonderland of tiny flowers.
A warm jasmine breeze floats through my window and my lust for life increases tenfold! L.A.'s fragrant harbinger of Spring gradually takes over the city and stirs awake a buzzing anticipation for hot nights to come. Rejuvenating and romantic and nostalgic and magical.
We grow fennel for its edible flowers and seeds, but mostly to invite marvelous anise swallowtail butterflies! We have two giant caterpillars about to pupate and I’ll post pictures of them once they hatch. This guy right here is about twelve days old.
Because sometimes your garden needs a punch of neon lime green.
They deliver gorgeous flowers locally every week for $49. Makes a great gift, especially the three-month subscription. My friend Liz once gave me this for my birthday, and it was such a delight for the whole winter.
Letting someone show you around their garden is so fun. You get to see their dreams for it and all the things that are growing and admire their work. People tend to be very proud of their gardens and it’s so fun to let them show you around and see all the plants and animals they have created homes for with a cold drink. Sometimes if you are lucky you will leave with basket for goodies. I have also had fun getting ingredients and cooking a meal with friends from their gardens.
I should paywall this but not gonna! I learned from my favorite geranium and pelargonium grower at the Huntington plant sale that the heads order from Geraniaceae, an enigmatic one-person nursery in Marin. The website is worth a visit just for A+ plant writing. You order by email, receive plants wrapped in damp newspaper, and send a check.
I got peonies today 💐
just take one & pray they're chill
I am not much of a gardener (Reader, I do not have a garden) but I imagine these gloves might make me more inclined to do so. Anyone who loves to garden will be just thrilled by these polka dot bunnies and endlessly grateful to you.
Vibrant, edible flowers and leaves with a peppery taste. Great for garnishes and salads. Very easy to grow.
Made in Japan with a carbon steel blade that runs through the beech handle. A must for every gardener!
spot the berries. pluck a few to taste. leave the rest for the birds. (delight every uninitiated child and adult you know!)
