Ok, we're obsessed w/ this idea! How fun to store your pencils in this on your desk + dispense them when you want one. Put it back when you're done. Can totally be used in a playroom or art space too for the kiddos. Options are limitless!
Extremely fun addition to the art supply stash—you apply it with a brush or a dip pen, and it goes on invisible, but pops in the dark or under UV, making it the perfect medium for for secret messages. And Napoleon used Herbin inks, too (they've been making inks since the 1600s), possibly for his secret messages.
Not technically a writing implement, but when I get stuck it sure helps to paint. Gets your little kid imagination firing again. These are gorgeous handmade palettes- I got “nudes” cuz I love to paint women, but the electric colors of the “Topanga” palette are calling…
if you are attracted to any medium just start doing it, your body and mind guide you to what you need. I started doing this out of sheer boredom during the pandemic and ended up loving it as my own therapy outlet after no longer having (free) access to a sculpture studio post grad. Ended up doing a few art festivals and one gallery showing and couldn’t believe I sold art/ was eventually hired for some commissions because one day I was bored and couldn’t go to the store for a Mother’s Day card. I still do this but not as often as I’d like and am posting to suggest anyone do it but also because I’d like to get back to doing it more regularly. (My art insta is linked)
GIMME some Fish Wife tins full of tiny gems.
These transparent, glassy little sticks lay down smooth, sheer, layerable color, perfect for adding flair to inky doodles. A lot of fun to mess around with.
Set up the box, see the “ask” screen, hold the button down to speak and tell Stickerbox what you want to make…release the button, and the box will print your creation. Yes, this is a rec that will break the app: Stickerbox is so fun for kids (and me, a grown adult kind of) —because it is an AI-generating magic trick that is funny, entertaining and satisfying. Cost, justified.
well, this is excellent!
We LOVE donating excess crafting supplies to Remainders in LA. If you're not in Los Angeles, google "Creative Reuse Donation Center" and see if there's a local center or library or school you can donate to.
I totally ruined my child for Crayola products by letting them use these; deep, vivid color, and you can use a paintbrush and water to transform the finish.
Build your own palette with these beautiful small-batch Italian watercolors from A. Gallo of Assisi.
To carry everywhere this summer: kneadable eraser + ink pad in a teeny tiny box.
I kept one of these in my wallet for years w/ a pad of Post-It notes; v. useful for keeping oneself and others amused in various waiting room and line situations. The tiny sharpener is key.
A wildly popular and addictive little thing that is one of the most popular gifts I give. It's essentially thirty blocks that you can arrange in any number of ways. Also a great thing to have around to keep you off your phone!
An elementary school art teacher turned me on to Kwik Stix and I’ve never looked back. Rich opaque chunky color goes on smooth with great flow and looks like oil stick, but dries instantly. Cleans up with water. The best coloring we do is with these guys.
Linen tape is a framer's and conservator's best friend! It can help to hinge or mount your special, delicate objects and is reversible. A little goes a long way.
I bought these fancy fluorescent paints for a dear friend's birthday, and they were a hit! Choosing Keeping also has the most beautiful gift wrap I have ever seen!
theeee best smell.
I’m in Hong Kong and just spent a few joyful hours poring through the books, handmade paper, and calligraphy brushes at Man Luen Choon Art Supplies. Up a staircase off a narrow alley; a treasure-trove for any artist.
One year, I was extremely obsessed with Bode’s senior cords and I screamed into the void (posted an Instagram story) asking if anyone knew what paint/markers Bode used to draw so finely on corduroy. Luckily, turns out one of my moots was an illustrator for Bode and shared this secret with me.
very good scrap bundles for making patches, etc. just in case you don't have enough in your stash already!
