On a yellow field, a leaping black ram with golden horns, hooves, penis, and crown, and a red tongue. So... uh... yeah. Cool flag! The ram is a prehistoric religious and martial symbol of virility and power. Heraldry tends to emphasize virility by always depicting male animals, and Swiss heraldry often specifies the color of genitals. Gold genitals may seem odd, but that was a papal decision that even the Protestant Reformation did not change.
do i need this
I was looking into the cover of an old copy of “Ariel” and stumbled onto this trove. Wolpe’s work (after escaping the rise Nazi Germany via book designer job in London) completely redefined graphic design. The entire inventory of covers are incredible.
i have five (5) Julie Houts prints framed in my home, including a different version of this "in a cab" illustration in our second bathroom. playful & girly with a teeny tiny edge! love love
Sweetest gift. From Maira Kalman, a signed and numbered limited edition booklet on the subject of joy in an embroidered pouch, wrapped in a little poster.
Found recently on Threads, this illustrator creates whimsical vintage inspired work. Initially drawn to this store for the dandelion sticker, I'm currently favoriting other items to purchase, just such beautiful work!
I'm working on a new project and have been enjoying finding inspiration by looking at familiar things (ie eBay shopping) with new eyes.
The Botanist by Andrea Ferolla, Italian illustrator and Co-Founder of Chez Dede.
Maybe he's not so good at putting stuff together, but you know what? He's not afraid to ask for help
Parisian illustrator with a sumptuous colored-pencil palette.
Sorry to put a jump scare in your timeline by showing you the cover of this book of mostly innocuous stories that is written explicitly for young readers. That said, the far-too-intense illustrations are the whole point. In 2011, reasonable people at the publisher updated the illustrations on a new edition to be less terrifying. This is now clearly understood to have been a mistake and current editions feature Stephen Gammell’s original nightmarish ink paintings. As a child these books were exactly the right amount of scary. Share them with kids at exactly the right time and they will be a source of deeply unsettled joy and fun.
a tattoo artist in Philly who draws beautiful pet portraits (graphite or gauche.) In the era of portrait AI slop, these feel even more special. From $95-$200
Holls Walk. This is a creator and illustrator I really like
Every doodle brings me so much joy.
Else Bostelmann's National Geographic illustrations introduced us to the uncanny deep sea creatures seen by William Beebe in the New York Zoological Society's bathysphere (1930s).
Send a dear friend a beloved portrait of their pet family member. Each time one of my friends have lost a pet family member, I’ve sent them a portrait which has helped them with their grief.
gorgeously rendered clothing, hair, and shoes. almost menacing in their perfection
A print of your sketch = the perfect birthday gift (This is Zeke, say hi Zeke!)
These oddball illustrators by a Japanese artist. They always make me smile. He sells them but the sell out faster than I can click- one day!
In the "two worlds" paintings of 90s Maui galleries, Lahaina was transformed from historic whaling port into spiritual backdrop as whales leapt from the ocean into skies filled with planets and nebulas. It is as if the whales were evolving into heavenly creatures before our eyes, soaring into new-age violet-blue horizons.
One of my favorite artists, Gustave Dore's paintings always leave me in awe. The paintings almost come alive in your imagination and you get lost in artistic symphony completely.
Mémoire is a master at weaving luxury giving with storytelling. Their World Boxes make wonderful gifts. I love the Lake World Box, which arrives wrapped in a custom- illustrated watercolor landscape. It include a Verdigris Handblown Glass Candle, a personalized Glass Lake Stationery Set, and a Classic Devon Leather Notebook in Oyster Blue.
Completely mystifying. Patrick Nagel did a bunch of original illustrations for Intel ads in the 1980’s and they’re all deeply confusing artifacts, but this one, in an ad for MILITARY SPEC HARDWARE is the most uncanny. This wasn’t a one-off! It was an illustration created for purpose! Part of a long series of Intel/Nagel collaboration! I can’t even.
