Fleabag — Season 2, Episode 1: Engagement Dinner
•••
Every line is perfection, it’s a one-act play in an episode. Funny, sharp, sexy, emotional, frustrating, and deep. Also, I am one of the insane people who bought the jumpsuit immediately upon seeing this episode and DO NOT REGRET IT.

Four Weddings and a Funeral (the TV show)

Okay, so first off, this has zero connection to the classic 90s movie outside of the fact that it does in fact feature all the events in the title, it’s about a cast of friends in London, and it has Andie MacDowell in it (as a different character!). But it’s fizzy, it’s charming, and the central romance between Maya and Kash (Nikesh Patel again! SO hot.) is believable. I love the cast of friends and it’s cozy in the same way that the 90s movie was, while being updated to remind you that — in fact — many, many people in London are not white, hah.

This Way Up

Aisling Bea, who wrote and starred in this show, is undeniably the funniest person in every room she’s in. She’s quick, charming, and a crackling good time. So is her alter ego here, Aine, and the genius of the show is its exploration of what the funniest person you know is trying to cover up. It deals so deftly with depression and other deeper topics while somehow also staying light and sharp.

Extraordinary

I mean, the tagline here basically says it all, but outside of being a bit of a genre comedy (everyone has a superpower, Jen does not), this is just this hilarious, bawdy, whip-smart portrayal of twenty-somethings trying to figure out how to grow up a bit and not screw up too badly that feels just on the palatable side of cringe. Also, did I mention bawdy? The sweetest character in this show (seriously, so lovable!) is named Jizzlord.

Jessie, played by Kiwi treasure Rose Matafeo, is one of the greatest characters ever — in a show whose rom-com trope is a normie and a celebrity falling for each other, you immediately see the appeal of Jessie-the-normie, and it takes longer for Tom-the-celeb to grow on you. To know Jessie is to love Jessie. Of course, it does help that this is one of the two shows in this genre smart enough to cast Extreme Hottie Nikesh Patel as the male lead. The chemistry is delicious!

The Masterpiece! I can either leave it there or talk for six hours straight about this show, but honestly, in that time, you could literally watch the whole thing (two seasons of six episodes each) yourself, so just go do that instead. I can’t imagine anyone regretting that.

Obviously it’s already so acclaimed, but a few days before the series finale, I am going to say: it’s still not enough. An incredible show about so many things, but at its core: women failing, succeeding, loving each other, and growing from that love. It’s a masterpiece and I’m not ready for it to be over!
