Announced our new married name at the end of the ceremony
•••
We decided to both change our surnames to a new married name of our choice. A few close friends and family members knew ahead of time. But for everyone else, they only found out when the officiant closed the ceremony with, “May I now present to you, Mr. and Mrs. Phoenix!” This pic is us entering the reception after the DJ announced us once again with our new name, and it’s our reaction to everyone going, “wait, so WHAT??” 😝😍🐦🔥

Fantasy Football
•••
I have been guilty of giving sports teams too much control over my happiness. It’s categorically dumb, given how I have literally zero influence or say in their performance, but there you have it. That said, as the larger world has gotten more chaotic and unstable in recent years, sports-related anguish almost feels cute and nostalgic. The stakes of how my team performs in any given season are so relatively low, it’s almost a luxury to care about it. This fall, I’m playing fantasy football for the first time in a decade and it’s even MORE removed from reality — I don’t even care how a team does, just if a certain player catches the ball. My loyalties change from game to game, week to week. It’s ridiculous, it’s arbitrary, it’s exactly the distraction level I need to cope with the ever-present horrors. 😝 Also, you get to come up with a silly name for your team and lightly trash-talk others in a (presumably) safe environment!

Go look at the stars
•••
It’s an easy way to recenter and gain perspective as to whatever reason you think we’re on this earth (for me: to love people and love living). The stars exist in our perception for such a long time, it helps me understand that my concerns and worries are truly slight. Also, it’s just so pretty. If you live somewhere light-filled like I do, just try to find or make the darkest spot you can and ideally stay out there for about 15 minutes. That’s how long it takes your eyes to adjust and you really will see more after that. Also, sorta (but not really) a cheat: almost all smartphones have a camera that can take wildly good photos of the stars in the sky. Just make sure your phone is propped on something steady, point it skyward, and give it a go! Sometimes just knowing those stars are/were up there steadily burning calms me even if I can’t see them all with my naked eye.

Table Manners
•••
I love a deep-dive personal interview. And while I’m not a big podcast listener in general, I’ve learned that a celebrity interview is actually my exact preferred niche. Like many, many people, I adore Amy Poehler’s Good Hang. So if that’s your thing too, you will likely love Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware. They actually have overlapped guests with Good Hang, but Table Manners’ schtick is that Jessie (a millennial British pop star) and her mother Lennie (A DELIGHT) make delicious food for their guest and have them over for a meal. Then they ask them questions about their background and work, but also their history with food and family. It’s often both relaxed and revealing, and I often come away from an episode feeling like I’ve had a deep friend session with someone whom I previously only knew through their work. Fun episodes if you want to give them a try: Saoirse Ronan, Colman Domingo, Jonathan Groff, Gloria Estefan, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Margot Robbie.

Two minutes into this: “oh no, am I going to watch this whole thing?” Afterwards: “Yup, and it was time perfectly spent!” So fascinating to see work done well, and obviously, now I want cake! 🍰

Knotwords

If you’re a word game aficionado/addict like me, this phone app is such a satisfying complement to the NYT ones! You make words given the letters available to you in a cluster — that’s it! It gets harder throughout the week, but isn’t really so hard as to be annoying; it somehow doesn’t require internet (so comes in clutch when you want to kill time on an airplane); and there are streaks, but if you forget a day or five, you can regain that streak when you come back to it by playing for a week. A near-perfect way to exercise your brain every day.
