Accidentally Wes Anderson
•••
It’s beautiful, whimsical, and also inspires travel wanderlust. The original popular website/Instagram account has no association with Wes Anderson, but they got him to write the intro to this when the book came out. It’s a delight!

Taking home mugs on vacation
•••
This is cheating a bit because these are our Airbnb’s mugs and not ours, but the feeling of taking them to sit on the beach is the same! Like we’re super-local and maybe a little kooky? Glorious mix.

LEGO House
•••
It’s late at night but I’m still buzzing after our day at the LEGO House, so let me just enumerate the reasons you should prioritize this place on your travel list: 1) LEGOs are wonderful, period. 2) Any space dedicated to passionate nerdery is the best, and this is definitely that. 3) The creativity and artistic talent on display here is bonkers (see image above!). 4) This is one of the coolest, most interactive spaces that invites you to create and play to your heart’s content. VERY much for kids and adults alike, and worth the trip out to Billund, Denmark.

Tips
Hyperfocusing on a specific dish while traveling
•••
I usually end up doing this anyway on a trip but it’s also so fun to deliberately identify a local dish from wherever you travel to that you’ll eat whenever you see it. I’m visiting Sweden right now and trying herring every time and place it’s available: mostly pickled but also fried, in mustard sauce, with anchovy seasoning. I’m pairing it usually with the mild Swedish präst cheese (I assume it’s very Swedish because I asked one waitress what it’s called and she said, “ummm, just our normal cheese?”), and it’s giving me a strong sense memory that I know I’ll always associate with this trip and location. Plus, locals are usually tickled to hear that you enjoy their local specialty and often can recommend even more places to try it! This could be food, drink, a specific dessert or pastry… you won’t regret it. And right when you’re starting to get tired of it, it’s probably time to head back home. 😆

Tips
Let algorithms plan your trip
•••
To be clear, I do not mean using AI, but one step behind that: let influencers and the social media algorithm help you plan. At least a few weeks before a trip, I go to Instagram and follow a few key accounts tied to wherever I’m going, ones that show you the main spots to visit, eat, and shop. Sometimes it’ll be the city or town’s tourism board, sometimes you look for the city and “secret,” sometimes you stumble on individuals who feel like it’s their job to share their city tips. Follow just 2-4 of them and then watch videos full of recommendations, opinions, and insider tips all flow into your feed. I use Instagram’s “Save” feature to quickly bookmark videos into a separate folder whenever I see them, then spend a dedicated hour later clicking through them and noting the ones I want to do in a spreadsheet or on a map. People who really live in a city have strong opinions about it, and largely want you to have a great trip there! That doesn’t change even when they’re just people in your phone.

Swedish Midsummer
•••
First off, this has nothing to do with the horror movie (my nerves can’t take horror, but everyone asks me about it when I say we’re doing this!). Midsummer is a traditional celebration in Sweden where everyone goes back to your hometown for specific foods, drinks, rituals, and it’s all about being together and celebrating the start of summer (the name is confusing! It’s always around the summer solstice in mid- to late June). We go to a hotel in the Dalarna region where they do all the traditional things for those who don’t have a Swedish family to go to — immigrants to Sweden, tourists like us, whoever! We make flower crowns, decorate the maypole, raise it in the town square, eat strawberries, and enjoy daylight that doesn’t ever really end. So excited to go back this year!

Eventide’s Brown Butter Lobster Roll
•••
I spent less than 24 hours in Portland the last time I was there and I still confidently recommend this as one of the best things you could eat in the city — it’s that good! The bun is more like a Chinese bao, which is just a perfect pairing for lobster.

Heart of Travel
•••
One of my favorite ways to travel! Heart of Travel organizes small group trips to many Latin and South American countries, emphasizing local artisans, non-touristy experiences, and bonding with other travelers. I’m a big travel planner myself, but having been on two HoT trips to Cuba and Colombia, I know I would NEVER have been able to plan such fun and meaningful trips myself. They work with local guides who take care of you: make sure you feel safe, ensure you have an incredible time, and seriously become ongoing life friends (if you want that!). Especially good for: solo travelers; women of all ages (my Cuba trip was 10 women aged 25-65!); travelers who prioritize experiences, culture, and food. One of my favorite HoT travel experiences is consistently meeting people from totally different environments who still remind me of myself and my friends. The world is tiny; the world is expansive. HoT opens the door wide to that feeling, and it has hooked me completely. ¡Buen viaje!

Caherconnell Fort
•••
This is a historical fort and sheep farm not terribly far from the Cliffs of Moher, and it’s incredible: you get to watch a sheepdog demonstration, then meet the sheep, hold baby lambs, pet the sheepdogs, and tour the fort ruins. Plus, the family who run it are so sweet. Top tier experience!
