The Grand Budapest Hotel
•••
It’s such a treat of a movie, and if you’re with it enough to follow the plot, one certainly exists. But if you’re at the level of sick where you’re dozing on and off, basically every scene is also beautiful and delightful in its own right, so you never feel like you missed much.

The director’s earlier movie Swingers is maybe better known for its use of LA/Hollywood locations, but this one hits for me more: a nighttime LA that’s all about being young and dumb, working dead-end jobs during the day and spending your nights at sketchy raves, someone’s random apartment on Sunset, parking lots full of shenanigans, and diners by dawn. And the whole time wondering if that guy across the party was in a soap opera you used to watch when you were home sick from school? The cast is also bonkers! By the time Melissa McCarthy randomly shows up (her first film role), it just feels like par for the course.

Quinceañera

I saw this at a film festival in Seattle, a month or so before moving back to LA, and I took it as a sign that it was going to be the right move — I’m not Mexican, not a teenager, and wasn’t moving to Echo Park. But I identified so strongly with the sense of place and the community in this movie — it made me so excited to return to a city full of stories, many of which don’t necessarily intersect, but all of which are being lived out vibrantly every day.

Annette Bening in 20th Century Women
•••
I just rewatched this movie for the first time since I saw it in the theater, and it’s such a perfect love story and ode to exactly what it says: women of the 20th century who lived through so much change. None of it would work at all though without the luminous, crackling, and frankly, very sexy performance from Annette Bening. I’m ashamed to say I never thought much about her before I saw this — I’ve seen some of her other movies but she never stood out to me necessarily. After this one though, I’m ready to join (or start!) the local chapter of her fan club — I cannot stop thinking of Bening and her character Dorothea and hoping they’re doing well, which is the hallmark of an indelible performance to me. If you missed this movie or just haven’t seen it in a while — treat yourself!

I think very possibly the best movie I saw in 2025.
