I moved to the suburbs at the beginning of 2026 and I’m thriving in my new “suburban dad” era. Some call it a lifestyle, I call it… me.
This is a tradition that I started for myself while I was in the army but basically all of my closest friends have these knives as well as all the officers that served on my team while I was in command. They still talk about getting them whenever I catch up with them and they still have it. don’t just get any type of knife. Wood handle makes it feel premium, silver blade makes it look durable. Don’t get the Demarcus blades they’re all fake anyways. Try and pick a timeless design. whenever I gifted them I always say, “I know you would have my back in any fight, now you have something to bring”
For the really special friends in my life I’ll get them watches. People think watches are super expensive and you can’t gift a watch unless it’s a Rolex or something. If you get an automatic silver watch you are giving someone something that they can wear every day of their life without breaking the bank. it’s my way of saying thank you for the time they’ve spent with me in my life. The best watches aren’t the most expensive or rare ones - they’re the ones ties to a memory, a friend, or whatever else
Dads love up-close bird watching
I gave this exact video bird feeder to my dad as a retirement gift two years ago, and the app’s daily roundup of visited birds at the feeder notification is one of the 5 that he religiously looks forward to. might be a good gift for your 70+ mom/dad once he’s back from his travels to dive into :)

We got my dad this trail cam a couple years ago, and it's been a value add to the family group chat. He doesn't hunt anymore (also 70 and "slowing down") but loves to check in with what's going on out there.

I got my dad this leather jacket from quince for his 70th birthday. My dad is a classic “no gifts” and “what the hell did you get me this for?” He’s never owned anything like it before, but he looks so cool in it and loves it! This might be good for a trip out west, or maybe he would like a different type of jacket more his birding/ LL bean vibe (Suede? Barn jacket?) idk you can never have too many jackets!

This is my standard housewarming gift for someone moving out on their own for the first time. Assembling furniture and fixing random stuff that’s a little loose or broken will involve substantially less profanity with a good one of these. (Yes you can go cheaper if you want, but this is a BIFL item so it’s worth making it nice.)

This is THE all-purpose shirt for any dad or mom or person who loves to be outside, be safe from the sun, and keep cool. Linked the women’s one here, but the men’s one is also great. A huge hit for my parents for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day last year. Bought this for my attempt to hike the John Muir Trail and couldn’t be happier with it. I haven’t used Patagonia’s capilene cool hooded sun shirt because all my research pointed to this one for hot weather and can attest it’s perfect for that. I use it for hiking but it can be enjoyed for any and all time in the sun.

Haven't used a regular razor since getting mine 4 years ago. Clean shave and blades last forever. No other electric ever worked for me.

how could I honestly recommend anything else? I wear Darn Toughs every single day and they are the best thing my feet have ever worn. also, my first pair from like 2012 still look great and have no holes. 10/10 could not recommend more 🩶 ben

Some love them, some hate them, but one cannot deny: these are what the astronauts wore in space. They’re absolutely awesome. My mom bought me a pair when I was 16 and I’ve had them ever since. Super cozy, super durable, super cool company lore.

Gifts that Build Over Time: a Toolbox
For his first Christmas, I got my nephew a red toolbox. Every year since, I've added a tool: a good pair of pliers, a great hammer, an excellent wrench, a sturdy measuring tape. I'll keep adding to it as the years go by. By the time he leaves for college, he'll have a legit set of tools.
