(Do not [ever]) chew bacon gum: Bacon gum is literally a small torn-off piece of raw bacon chewed on like gum. My grandfather was born in 1910 and was raised on a farm in Hagerstown, Maryland. The was normal in his family.

He taught me how to type without looking at the keyboard, how to use LOGOS code— and that bacon gum was a good idea. He stood with me in front of the open fridge and showed me the protocol when I was 5, and I think my mom figured out I was regularly doing this by the time I was seven. (Yes, she put a stop to it).

Unhinged nicknames: My family is out of control with the nicknames. My mom’s for me range from vaguely Russian (Dadle Dushky) to downright offensive (Fatty Patooshky) to plain confusing (Pork and Beans). I love them! They’re always changing—currently I call my sister some version of “Crab Leg” “Crusty Crab” or “Crustopher.” Her name is Bridget. She calls me Quagmire. We’re all fine!!

“kutzi” after someone coughs: kutzi is to cough as bless you is to sneeze. comes from my maternal great grandparents who spoke a myriad of eastern european languages, but i think this is just from classic yiddish tradition. they are pictured here with my grandfather (saba) who looks like an absolute dunce of a toddler.

Owning a Parrot???: My family is in many ways soooo vanilla but sometimes I think about how I grew up with a pet parrot, Newton, which feels so deeply unlike my parents and anyone making a normal choice about an animal with whom to share your home. Made for great childhood pics though and of course we taught it to relentlessly compliment my grandmothers (“Pretty Grammy! Pretty Grammy!”)
