Riesling is one of the world's greatest white grapes. Really. If someone says they like Riesling you can't pigeonhole them they way you can with someone who says they like Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which is a very singular and particular style. The style range that Riesling occupies is so vast, it's impossible to relegate a Riesling lover to just one. Riesling is capable of making particularly expressive wines which give a true sense of place. The wines are long-lived and come in all sweetness levels, so you can drink them dry to sweet and from light to luscious. They can be low in alcohol (5%) to high (14%). Generally the aromas of Riesling are floral, fruity, and mineral. If those aromas get your salivary glands revved up, check out these delicious alternates.

If the term 'ba-da bing' had a wine equivalent, Kerner would be it. Kerner is a crossing between Riesling, a white grape, and Trollinger, a red grape. What's fab about Kerner is that it's got the fruit and acidity of Riesling and the body of Trollinger, so it's got some junk in the trunk. Its weight means you can have it with richer foods, like cheesy risotto and a calorific onion tart. And the producer? One of my faves. Not for nothing, their Pinot Grigio is one of the best out there!

2022 Südtirol Eisacktaler Kerner
Kerner from Alto Adige. Clean and crisp with a saline minerality. Notes of citrus, alpine flowers and stone fruits. Drinks somewhere in between a Riesling and Chablis. An all-time favorite at an amazing price

Domaine Schoffit 'Harth - Cuvée Caroline' Gewürztraminer
Soft, dreamy & creamy, this Alsatian Gewürztraminer has notes of spun honey, ginger, lychee, lime blossom and rose petals. It has a luxurious texture that's silky and round, and it has just enough of a kiss of residual sugar to be off-dry which will make it friendly with biryani, curries, and all sauces that have cardamom, coriander, cumin, or chilis. Be careful of the alcohol level with Gewürztraminers, though! This one is 13.5%, but you really don't want to go above 14% as that could risk your chilis tasting even hotter.

2022 Yakima Valley Chenic Blanc
A wine that manages to be simultaneously rich and laser-focused, coating your palate with flavors of bruised yellow apple and honeycomb before hitting you with a wave of electric, cleansing acidity. It’s a serious bottle for people who don’t take themselves too seriously—the perfect drinkable bridge between the two winemakers' homelands of Washington State and South Australia.

Knoll, Riesling Smaragd Schutt, 2022
I had a bottle of the 2008 vintage the other day and all I'll say is... wow! I think this might be one of my favorite wines I've had all year. Knoll is an incredible estate and Schütt is a beautiful vineyard. If you're looking for a gift for a wine lover or you yourself want to try something truly special, I can't recommend this enough. Wachau rieslings are different than German or more specifically Mosel rieslings (which I love as well), they are more structured and with more fruit characteristics. This is bone dry and has racy acidity with balancing fruit and structure. Open it now or even in ten years, it's going to be amazing!

Julian Haart Riesling 1,000L 2024
One of my favorite dry Rieslings. Sourced from 25-year-old vines in the Grand Cru Goldtröpfchen vineyard. The “1,000L” is so-named because it is a wine that was, originally, a chosen Fuder – a 1,000L barrel. The entire barrel was bought, and that was that. The wines is always brisk, tense with high-toned citrus, good minerality.

Summer wine for us this year: bone-dry Rieslings from the Clare Valley in South Australia. Bright and clean, goes with a lot of food and just as happy to be the perfect pour for our sundowners!

This is a natural wine made in Germany and described 100% accurately as as "Clean, green, and totally serene."

Domaine Aux Moines, Savennieres-Roche Aux Moines, 2023
I remember the first time I tried this wine and it was one of the most beautiful Chenins I had tried and maybe still have tried. Rich and linear, fruit and mineral. And made by a mother-daughter duo in Savennieres-- yes please! Perfect for the weather, perfect for the holidays.

I usually tell people that I like white wine when it tastes like liquid concrete. I don't know how else to explain it. A crispy, crunchy, mineral driven spanish white that pairs well with a spicy cold cut sandwich. Great at room temp, but really shines when chilled. Enjoy outside.

los bermejos malvasia volcanico seco
if you like CRISP white wines, you’ll love this little number from the Canary Islands. Volcanic soils are running the show here. Delish.

Grüner Veltliner like you’ve never had before. Vibrant acidity with a creamy and complex finish. Thought it was Chardonnay at first. Can’t say enough about this producer and this wine in particular

Weingut Oppenauer, Grüner Wine
I am not a huge wine drinker, but this was the best white wine I have had in awhile. Light, refreshing, a little bubbly. Perfection.

i would wear this wine as a perfume, beautiful lychee notes

Not a sweet wine person? This is your wine. Bone-dry, super saline, tastes like crushed oyster shells in the best way. It's aged sur lie which just means it sat on dead yeast for a while and came out creamier for it. Organic, Loire Valley, cute little retro boat on the label. Like $16-20 which is insane for what it is.

a non-champagne bubble that’s equally as complex
Crémant from 100% chenin blanc. I love how it tastes so fully like chenin. Truly a wine that just so happens to be sparkling. It’s fresh and sharp, balanced with the typical lanolin, cream, and lemony chenin blanc profile. Could easily drink this over and over again
