Nutritional Yeast
•••
I love nutritional yeast. I sprinkle it on my eggs and my salads and my avocado toast. I season my popcorn with it (along with olive oil, black pepper, and a little salt). I dust it over my lazy weeknight kitchen sink pasta dinners, or stir it into my radiatori + broccoli/sautéed greens + olive oil for a kinda Mac ‘n’ cheese-y vibe. For me, it is not a cheese replacement, but for many it is! Sometimes I want a savory little topping or add-in but I don’t want a cheese. In those instances and so many more, I turn to my nutritional yeast. I love that it looks like fish food. I love its dorky name and refuse to call it “nooch” but if you wanna do it, that’s your journey. Despite being a relatively smart and “with it” individual, I only recently learned that “nutritional yeast” is not just a clever name- it does, indeed, have nutritional value!

Pappy & Harriet’s
•••
Every city’s got that tiny dive that’s unassuming and been around forever and somehow has a show calendar that rivals the mainstream venues’. Well, Pioneertown does, too, and it is called Pappy & Harriet’s. It’s an institution and you feel it when you walk inside. Go if a band you know or like is playing and you’ll remember the show for years. Go if you’ve never heard of the band to enjoy high vibes and undoubtedly great music. Bonus: they have food!

Espresso with lemonade + lavender simple syrup
•••
Get your icy caffeine kick without guzzling a bunch of milk on a hot day (unless you want to!). I overheard someone ordering it and was skeptical, but … it’s officially my drink of the summer, especially if I’m walking (ie. not jumping right into an AC’ed vehicle). It’s refreshing, it’s tangy, and somehow it works.

Things I like to do
Freeze your fruit
•••
It is extremely hot and, while I love all things gelato and sorbet, I can only tolerate so much dairy and sugar. Plus, the water content (maybe?) helps keep you hydrated. Double plus, I tend to lose my appetite in the heat and fruits have fiber and vitamins. Third plus, kids (or at least my nieces) love the novelty of a (usually squishy) frozen solid strawberry or grape. Add’l rec: Freeze some citrus slices to take your water or soda to the next level.

Turn their quirky favorites into traditions
•••
My mom wasn’t much of a ‘drinker’ but she discovered the blue cheese-stuffed olive martini later in life, and was always delighted when a bar or restaurant had it on the menu. It actually took a few failed attempts at various hip bistros for her to realize that the blue cheese-stuffed olive was not a given! On her birthday and death day, I invite a friend or two to raise a glass in her honor. I usually make a few calls or ask around to find a bar that serves them, which is part of the fun. One year I brought my own olives to the dive bar where a pal’s gf worked. Sometimes I share stories and memories, sometimes we just toast “to Winnie,” and enjoy an indulgent martini on whatever day of the week it is. Every time, I feel like my mom and I are exchanging a little wink when my pal and I clink glasses and take the first sip.

Make your own simple syrup

It’s a fast and easy way to elevate your coffee experience. If you’re feeling frisky, try different sugars (coconut sugar is fun) or tossing in an aromatic or two.

Add spices to your coffee grounds
•••
Create depth, flavor, and your own signature brew when you add spices to your coffee grounds. My Holy Trinity is cinnamon + cardamom + vanilla extract, but feel free to get creative! Experiment with different combos and volumes and see what happens! Don’t worry: you will not end up with 90s style overly flavored coffee. Instead, you’ll have the gentlest whisper of whichever aromatics you added. If I’m using a Toddy, I add the spices in the second round of coffee grounds. If you find something you love, you can even try freshly grinding, cinnamon sticks, cardamom, pods, etc. in a spice grinder when you grind your beans, and throw ‘em together so everything is extra fresh.

Bircher Muesli
•••
Yogurt + muesli. The original overnight oats with all of the fiber and protein and (almost) none of the fuss. This my favorite breakfast when the weather starts to get warmer. I love Alpen but you could use Bob’s Red Mill or whatever’s in your grocer’s bulk bin. Make it the night before and add some frozen berries or stir in your a pinc of cinnamon or cardamom (or both!). Add grated apple if you’re a purist. Make it right when you wake up and give it… 20m? 45m? Whenever you’re ready? Top it with seeds, nuts, bee pollen, fresh or dried fruits, or whatever you want. Enjoy!
