Lemon Balm
•••
It’s easy to grow and smells divine. Lemony, yes, but with a whisper of mint. Throw a sprig in your water for spa-like hydration. Give a little rub on your way out of or into the house for an olfactory pick-me-up. Harvest a bunch, dry it out, and make calming, sleep-supporting, digestion-aiding tea. Note: plant it in a container or it could take over your garden.

The Filler Call
•••
~25yrs ago, my sister was in college and called my late father at work in the middle of the day. When he answered she said something along the lines of “Oh, I’m just walking to class,” and hopped off the call 10min later once she’d arrived. 60min later, she called him again - “Oh, I’m just walking home from class,” - and my dad chuckled, then replied “Ah, so I’m filler,” and the Filler Call® was born. The Filler Call is quick and has no agenda. The Filler Call is usually spontaneous, but can come with a pre-text like, “Wanna be my Filler in 5m?” Related: it’s required to identify the Filler Call as such upon answering. A close friend and I have a routine where, if we miss a call from the other and we only have a few minutes, we’ll text “Filler?” so we don’t miss an opportunity for a quick catch-up. That said, there’s no guilt involved if you can’t take a Filler Call; it’s always optional. The Filler Call is for a specific circle of friend or family: those with whom we can go deep but don’t always need to, partly because a regular cadence of Filler Calls can keep you pretty well caught up. And, if nothing else, hearing someone’s voice and popping into a few minutes of their day every so often is a special little treat on its own.

Change or try one new thing each day
•••
Turn right one block earlier on your usual walk and notice a flower you haven’t seen before. Switch up your coffee shop or maybe just your order for a day. Call someone you haven’t talked to in a while. Flip when you normally exercise and/or read for pleasure. Try a different form of exercise. Listen to a new podcast. Just one change each day! Think of each little change as a reclamation, a homecoming to you. Maybe you’ll discover a new favorite. Maybe you’ll just give your body and mind something else to focus on for a few minutes.

Freeze your fruit
•••
It is extremely hot and, while I love all things gelato and sorbet, I can only tolerate so much dairy and sugar. Plus, the water content (maybe?) helps keep you hydrated. Double plus, I tend to lose my appetite in the heat and fruits have fiber and vitamins. Third plus, kids (or at least my nieces) love the novelty of a (usually squishy) frozen solid strawberry or grape. Add’l rec: Freeze some citrus slices to take your water or soda to the next level.

Eucalyptus + Any Flower
•••
My chic sister does this so, naturally, I copied her and am going to use this formula for the rest of the summer and maybe my life. I love to keep fresh flowers in my home, but building an arrangement is daunting so I always go mono. Eucalyptus is a fragrant addition that’s both neutral and quite pleasing.

Salt scrub before bed
•••
I salt scrub nightly, but weekly (or whenever you feel called) is still effective! I’ve tried dozens of brands and this is by far my favorite. It’s exfoliating, moisturizing, and quite calming. And, most importantly, salt cleanses your energetic field of whatever/ whomever’s vibes you’ve picked up. This is a nonnegotiable on days when I’m interacting with/around a lot of strangers, or if I’m having heavy or tense conversations. Slough off that day or week’s energy and let it flow down the drain. Emerge from the shower cleansed, nourished, and ready for a restful night’s sleep

Oil your cutting boards
•••
Extend the life, enhance the function, and improve the appearance of your cutting boards with mineral oil. I use Boos Mystery Oil but any food-safe mineral oil will work. I’ve had my butcher block cutting board for >5yrs and this has kept her looking like new (and fighting off, warping, cracks, etc.). Every couple of weeks (or whenever my cutting board starts to look ashy), after I’ve washed and let the board fully air dry, I slather on a ton of this stuff and let it sit overnight. I’ll usually do my wooden spoons and spatulas, too. In the morning they’ve got a rich, glossy glow (and supercharged water resistance and anti-microbial properties!).

Propogate your plants
•••
Take off an inch here and there, fill a little jar with water, submerge the nodes, and start a nursery. Pot once roots start to grow and turn your house into a jungle. I like gifting them to friends and neighbors, creating a little plant community.
