My sleep therapist recommended "condensing my sleep" by pushing back bedtime to have fewer wakeups in the middle of the night. It is counterintuitive but it works.

Early to Rise, Early to Bed! Guided Yoga Nidra
•••
I don’t take it for granted, but I could fall asleep almost anywhere anytime. It’s my superpower. But as I get older, magnesium, yoga nidra, and reading something a little dense before bed does the trick.

Earplugs that work
$24.95
•••
I know we're not supposed to put anything in our ears but... I can't sleep if my partner is snoring, there's noise outside, etc. I think putting in my earplugs is also a signal to sleep. I love that these are washable (no more buying disposable ones over and over, which wasn't very eco, either). And they won't go too far into your ear so you can stop worrying about that, too. They didn't have the sleep ones yet when I was in the market so I got the "Quiet" ones, but I'm interested to try them! BY the way I also have the ones for loud music or events. Love...

SleepPhones Comfortable Headband Headphones

these + the “sleeping with celebrities” podcast. also!!!!! as I’m getting ready for bed / before going to sleep, I turn on a bedside lamp with a smart lightbulb and make it the color RED. the absence of blue light and the kind of simulated sunset feeling makes you sleeeepy but you can still see stuff in your room until you’re ready to turn out the light. it’s very calming! call me Roxanne because I love that dang red light. source: I had insomnia for apprx 500 years but now I do not

nodpod

With a nod pod. I was skeptical that this would be overhyped but honestly it makes such a difference to my sleep. This plus reading before bed, seems to do the trick.

Sleep with your head at the foot of your bed
•••
I know this sounds weird, but it has always worked for me since I was a kid. Is it the firmer part of the mattress? A change in room perspective? I’m still not sure.

Cookbooks
Time Life Foods of the World
•••
I read cookbooks to fall asleep and I bought a whole collection of these off of eBay after being an idiot and only getting a few after stumbling on a huge collection at a thrift store once. They are so well researched and have great stories and photography but they’re just a tiny bit boring which lulls you right to sleep…

Military Sleeping Technique
•••
There's a sleeping method developed by the military for soldiers under stressful environments that involve a combination of muscle relaxation and breathing techniques. I've used this in bouts of insomnia to help fall asleep quicker and it makes a measurable difference according to my Oura ring.

I know this looks like a lot of $$ for something you can’t really see/touch/feel it working, but omg does it work. I love to do it at night and it knocks my ass out. I’ve fallen asleep on it more times than I can count. If you wanna sleep like a baby and chill out those anxious thoughts, get this.

Sooo it turns out that sunshine, fresh air, and, in particular, moving my body are what help me sleep really well, and NOT 3 hours of doomscrolling in bed as I had previously hoped!!!

The Big Bang Theory

I can only fall asleep if the TV is on. Been my routine since I was 7 when my brother got a tv in his bedroom for Intellivision - dating myself here guys - and I cried injustice. Lately it’s been this show, which I snobbish hated on for so long until I finally tried it. If you haven't dipped in, it’s worth it. It’s the FRIENDS of the 21st century.

Restore 3
$169.99

The Hatch Restore has totally changed my approach to sleep by just removing my phone from the equation. I tried an old-school Braun alarm clock but it's quite jarring when you are woken up from a deep sleep! The Hatch reminds you (gently) when it's time to go to sleep and wakes you up (also gently) when it's time to rise. 10/10 recommendation.

Legs up the wall
•••
This is my truest recommendation. I was lowkey developing a wee bit of a dependency on sleeping pills. In a desperate attempt to stop I started trying anything to calm my nerves before bed. I’ve never had issues falling asleep but I swear the first night I started doing this I began staying asleep. It’s a non-negotiable for me now, 5-10 minutes before bed every night and I’m 😴

Dear Apothecary Magnesium Glycinate

Do I wonder if I’m overpaying for my monthly subscription when there’s magnesium at Costco? Yes. Did I also read on some blog or website that this was the best one? Yes. Have I been sleeping through the night since starting this and am now too dependent to consider changing? Also yes.
