I've heard of this but never tried it! Now is the time. Thank you so much :)

Thanks for sharing. I "had" to dig deeper into this! :) The chief source is the 1981 book "Relax and Win" by Bud Winter. It's based on WWII military training. He in turn credits Dorothy Hazeltine Yates -- who seems to have been inspired by Edmund Jacobson (potential rabbit hole ahead :)). Interestingly, some stuff seems to have gotten lost in translation, because Winter actually stresses the canoe should not float: "When you think of a scene with motion in it, or dream with muscular activity in the dream, the muscles involved in that activity actually contract. We have proved that fact by putting electrodes on a cadet's muscles when he was asleep...". Winter’s actual canoe visualization is lying in a canoe on a serene lake looking at the sky, with "no movement or motion involved".

My Army brat upbringing meant we were trained in this… I can still fall asleep pretty quickly wherever I am.
