Trying to expand my music horizons — I've been really into London Grammar, Phoebe Bridgers, Fiona Apple, and Lana Del Rey. Looking for similar artists in tone and style.

Turn the volume all the way up and settle into the moody, inspired sounds of Cate Le Bon. Start with Pompeii or Michelangelo Dying; first listen must be start to finish.

We made this after she almost died of a heart attack. She’s pretty unknown in US but this won the Australian version of the Grammy.

japanese breakfast
•••
michelle zauner is in fact not japanese. she’s half korean, half white—an experience expounded upon in her memoir “crying in h mart”. I’ve cried while reading this book. the mixed asian diaspora trauma is told so beautifully. (the story behind why michelle chose this name is something I want people to explore themselves.) but I digress. zauner is the frontwoman and lead for japanese breakfast, the dreamy & experimental shoegaze indie pop/rock outfit. she’s backed by peter bradley (guitar), deven craige (bass), craig hendrix (drums, keyboards, backing vocals), plus lauren baba (violin) and adam schatz (saxophone). it’s some weird stuff, but might be what you’re looking for. I like “everybody wants to love you”.

started by josiah johnson in 2009, but he’s no longer a member. current lineup: jonathan russell (vocals, guitar, percussion), charity rose thielen (violin, guitar, vocals), chris zasche (bass), kenny hensley (piano), tyler williams (drums), and matt gervais (guitar, vocals). hauntingly beautiful vocals with a rich acoustic sound. it’s woeful and yearning, yet earnest all the same. my favorite tune is “rivers and roads”.

Method Actor - Nilüfer Yanya
•••
A true mercurial British singer/songwriter. If you haven’t heard of her yet, tap in! Her music blends folk, jazz, indie rock, and she loves a pedal steel guitar (same girl). She opened for Alex G on tour last year and I suspect will be releasing new music this year.

“Mixing dreamy atmospheres, wistful extended chords, and funky, low-key dance grooves, Men I Trust is the brainchild of then-Laval University music students Dragos Chiriac and Jessy Caron. The Montreal, Canada D.l.Y. project made its full-length debut with Men I Trust in 2014.”
