Very beautiful movie, and does a fantastic job at expressing how mental health/illness can affect someone, while keeping the liminal essence of the game and vhs tapes. Its soundtrack is also amazing.

The Chronology of Water

The Chronology of Water, shot on 16mm, is a daringly poetic exploration of trauma. There are so many scenes where defamiliarization is a device that is used as a way to describe the palimpsest of harm and pleasure on the body. The film is based on a book that is very much about how to write your way out. It feels rare to see contemporary films made with this tactile, sensitive yet toothy handling of material. By material, I mean film and sound as mediums entangled with records of trauma etched into our bodies. I already reced an interview with Kristen Stewart, powerfully discussing or (defending) the film. That interview convinced me to watch The Chronology of Water, and I've been thinking about it ever since. So if you're unsure of the terrain, that might be a place to start.

I thought this was just about perfect. A Brazilian friend of mine was concerned that North Americans wouldn’t find it interesting without the historical context (and I’m sure some background reading on the military dictatorship in the 70s wouldn’t hurt) but I experienced it as an outstanding political thriller——intimate, funny and universal in its portrayal of fear, violence and love.

Frankenstein (2025) is visual feast. The sets, costumes, prosthetics, makeup, and shots were just amazing to look at. The colors were rich and the symbolism was delicious. It’s not my favorite movie from 2025, but is one I would still rec.

In an era when promoters were very opposed to having more than one woman artist on a festival line-up, Sarah McLachlan defied all odds by creating the first ever music festival to feature all women artists. This Dan Levy-produced documentary features a host of huge artists from the 90s era, including Sinead O'Connor, Tracy Chapman, Erykah Badu, Fiona Apple, Paula Cole, Sheryl Crow, and heaps more. Nostalgic and super interesting! I get goosebumps just watching the trailer.

Wake Up Dead Man (2025)

The best of the Knives Out movies so far, and that's no slight on the first two. Just fantastic. (Also, depending on how well-versed you are in Christianity: this was an excellent post-watch read for me about a boatload of religious stuff that sailed right over my head.)
