michelle zauner is in fact not japanese. she’s half korean, half white—an experience expounded upon in her memoir “crying in h mart”. I’ve cried while reading this book. the mixed asian diaspora trauma is told so beautifully. (the story behind why michelle chose this name is something I want people to explore themselves.)

but I digress. zauner is the frontwoman and lead for japanese breakfast, the dreamy & experimental shoegaze indie pop/rock outfit. she’s backed by peter bradley (guitar), deven craige (bass), craig hendrix (drums, keyboards, backing vocals), plus lauren baba (violin) and adam schatz (saxophone).

it’s some weird stuff, but might be what you’re looking for. I like “everybody wants to love you”.
