This place is lovely and shaded, in case you need a respite from the sun. It includes a stone path through a little pond, which amused my young kids for a good chunk of time. P.S: it's a great stop to add to a trip to the Wonderland or Sea Harbor trails.

I found this while running on a trail near Bar Harbor. Rocky and his artist wife open their studio up on Fridays and Saturdays. It's a great place to get to know a lovely pair of artists and pick up a souvenir of sgraffito pottery inspired by Acadia.

Mount Desserts Pies

Every year, we start at the Salt Cottages at Bar Harbor and go down the road to pick up two pies (one Maine blueberry, one strawberry rhubarb) from this delightfully unpretentious bake shop. We slowly devour these over the course of the week for breakfast, after dinner, and it is simply the perfect taste of summer.

Acadia National Park Night Sky Ranger Program

Protect our national parks! Acadia is just an incredible park. But this was such a special experience, particularly in August during the Perseids showers. The rangers are so enthusiastic about the art of stargazing, and have these powerful lasers that effectively lead you around the night sky; the inventors of constellations certainly had their heads deep in the wine urns or some other strong substance of antiquity, because that misshapen quadrilateral does not truly look like a dolphin (Delphinus) or a flying horse (Pegasus). If your husband is an astronomy nerd like mine, he will make sure you go on a night without clouds for the best experience.

This was an excellent rec! I loved the New Orleans twist to the lobster roll and lobster dinner (aka lobster boil). It was a nice change to have gumbo instead of chowder.

Jordan Pond trails

The path around the Pond was lovely. Our three and five year old survived at least the shaded part of the trail, and more importantly, we parents survived. The raised boardwalk provided most of the entertainment. Popovers with butter and jam were the post-hike reward.

The logo is amazing, obviously, and our whole family has the merch. The muffins are genuinely delicious, when hot and slathered with butter. But also their egg muffin was bodega-worthy, and the lobster omelet really well done. Also, if you get to talking, you'll learn from the waiter about how fall and winter is for "newlyweds and nearly deads" and that Martha Stewart is kind of mean.

Can attest that this is a wonderful place to visit. Attended a wonderful tour and learned about the fairly new practice of sustainable oyster farming in Maine. Finally learned to shuck an oyster, with only a minor flesh wound. Great merch!

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

A lovely walk to yet another gorgeous Maine, perfectly doable with young children. It will probably go a lot faster for your family than mine: they found irregular path stones, the stranded seaweed, and the hundreds of colorful buoys endlessly fascinating. Do mind the gaps!

McLoons Lobster Shack

A gorgeous vista of the water and a dozen bobbing boats is the perfect backdrop for eating perfectly golden lobster roll and a boiled lobster dinner. The chowder is also excellent, and other options like crab and oysters are also available. The dessert selection is tops, but there are also free s'mores around the fire pits.

Maine Lobster Festival

Free admission to a mini state fair! Petting zoo and balloon animals and bouncy houses, 2/3s of which are free! A rare calico lobster sighting! Children and adults stomping from lobster cage to lobster cage across the bay while you eat a lobster roll from the dock! Great fun for the family.

Just came with my family this morning. The service is warm but efficient, and I had the most glorious strawberry rhubarb pancakes. Great views out the back!
