The artisan market at Plazuela del Carmen Alto in Oaxaca, Mexico: There is an artist here who sells the most exquisite wire creatures - mostly bugs, but some birds and crustaceans, as well. She doesn’t come every day, and usually only in the afternoons (at least last time I was there); if you ask the other vendors, they’ll tell you if she’s expected that day. I went back to Oaxaca years after first seeing her and tried to find her every day I was in the city, without success - until the last day, when she was there.

All the other stalls are lovely, too.

The tomato salad by a trailblazing young female chef in Oaxaca, Mexico: To be fair, all the food at Levadura de Olla is very good. But this salad is radically farm-to-table in a way that’s made it something of a trademark for chef Thalía Barrios García, who sources the different varietals of tomatoes — indigenous to the Americas, not Italy! — from the village in which she was raised. Of greatest importance, and despite its sublime simplicity, it’s incredibly delicious.
