KITTE Marunouchi, an incredible boutique mall in the center of Tokyo

Make sure you get a meal at Snow Peak’s restaurant! I love window-shopping (and occasionally caving and buying little trinkets) here.

MUJI HQ in Ginza, Tokyo
•••
This is a multistory MUJI and has so many things that are unavailable elsewhere (for instance, I’ve purchased a traditional shuro broom there as well as cotton slippers in a pattern I’ve never seen elsewhere, and these scrap towels seem really useful). Excellent spot to look for high-quality kitchen supplies.

Such a great store. Also check out Hands, Beams, and Loft for great stationery, kitchen, hardware, and all manner of other supplies in this same neighborhood.

Bodrum on the UWS
•••
This is the place I would go with my mom’s college best friend and his girlfriend (my quasi-uncle and aunt) when I lived in NYC, and I still adore going when I visit. The very best hummus I’ve ever had. Pizzas and salads great, too. Another fun spot to take ’rents is Frenchette, in my experience.

Paçzki (jelly doughnuts)

I grew up with an Emily Eveleth jelly doughnut perched above my parents’ fireplace mantel, so the raspberry from this place is just absolutely classic for me. It is, importantly, also delicious.

Staying at this apartment in Shin-Okubo
•••
Not a hotel, but I adored this Airbnb in Shin-Okubo. The picture-perfect little postage stamp of an apartment, with every amenity you might need. Plus, the neighborhood is really nice and has a ton of low-key Tokyo character, while still being extremely central. (I actually spent a ludicrous amount of time looking at Google streetview for various hotels and Airbnbs, and this place was exactly what I was going for - essentially, a vibe akin to this NHK doc about a shrine beneath a massive tree in a residential Tokyo neighborhood. The apartment and surroundings managed to live up to my own -insanely - high hopes.)

Hike to Te Pari with Abel Haro
•••
There are a number of Polynesian guides offering hiking tours on Tahiti - I hugely recommend taking one because a.) many exquisitely stunning locations are completely inaccessible otherwise and b.) you can do your part to give your tourism dollars to Polynesians, as opposed to French (colonial) interests that are heavily invested in the islands. I did a trip to Te Pari with Abel back in 2022, and his, his wife’s, and their friend Reva’s incredible kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity were the highlight of the trip. His contact info is listed in the post (in French) linked.

Coconut crab at Restaurant Tiahura on Moorea
•••
Make sure to call them in advance to check what days they’ll have coconut crab (a.k.a. kaveu) available - they need to get it from another island so it’s not every day. I’m a New Englander so very loyal to my lobster so far as shellfish go, but this was outstanding. Waitstaff are so kind, as well. The coconut bread they serve it with is just delicious. Highly recommend watching the Anthony Bourdain Tahiti episode before you go, btw!

Marché de Papeete on Sunday mornings
•••
Get there as early as you can! The local food vendors show up in full force only on Sundays (though other days are fun too). The traditional Polynesian foods available are truly incredible. Amazing fresh fruit and veggies (guava, pineapple, bananas, passionfruit, mango, papaya with lime, avocado, cucumbers…), coconut water, and sugarcane juice, too. Other amazing food you can get on the islands, often at grocery stores/canteen-style shops: Rashun bacon chips, great-quality French cheeses from Carrefour, poulet roti et frites at roadside stands (often only open weekends), Citronade and Pomelade, grilled tuna with French fries and profiteroles with coconut ice cream from Moorea Maitai outside Hotel Manava, coconut water and snacks from Fare Tutava on Moorea. I heard Snack Mahana was incredible but I didn’t get a chance to eat there. If you happen to want to rent scooters or bikes on Moorea, try Moorea Island Beach Hotel - their rentals were way better quality and price than elsewhere, in my experience!

The artisan market at Plazuela del Carmen Alto in Oaxaca, Mexico
•••
There is an artist here who sells the most exquisite wire creatures - mostly bugs, but some birds and crustaceans, as well. She doesn’t come every day, and usually only in the afternoons (at least last time I was there); if you ask the other vendors, they’ll tell you if she’s expected that day. I went back to Oaxaca years after first seeing her and tried to find her every day I was in the city, without success - until the last day, when she was there. All the other stalls are lovely, too.

The eclairs at this bakery on Patmos, Greece
•••
I grew up with the very best, most classic, hole-in-the-wall French-style bakery right on the walk to elementary school. My grandma was friendly with the very kind Greek (!) owner (she and her husband had purchased it from the original owners, who no doubt WERE French), who probably gave every single child - but certainly every child in my family, at least - who came into her bakery, with or without cash to buy anything, a free treat, usually a mini eclair. That bakery is now shuttered and the owner off to enjoy a beautiful retirement in Greece, and I briefly mourned the fact that I might never be able to find eclairs again like hers; those bougie French ones just don’t do it for me, and I’ve given them plenty of chances. But then I visited Greece. Turns out (makes sense if you think about it for a fraction of a second!) she was making Greek-style eclairs, I guess. This place has them, and they are delectable.

Camp in Ojai, California
•••
This is the cheapest and (imo) best way to experience Ojai - it’s such a great area and well worth a multi-day stay, but equally so so many of its accommodations are at a price point that’s inaccessible for folks with budgetary restrictions of any kind. Plus, you can use all that money you save on citrus. Dennison Park is a great campground in town; I would just advise trying to get a site that has a level grade.

Caramelizing the shallots in your Greek salad
•••
Courtesy of Tarsanas Marine Club on Patmos, Greece, where the salad redefined what a Greek salad could be to me. Here’s how I do it: panfry shallots in some olive oil, lightly salt/pepper. Tomato, cukes, feta, olives. Very important to slice the green pepper into those funky rings (or, if you wanna take it up a notch, sub with blistered shishitos 👀). Dress with EVOO, red wine vinegar, dried oregano, little more salt and pepper. Done.

Village Burger in Waimea on the Big Island
•••
Wagyu beef for a burger is unnecessary and somewhat outrageous, but oh so good. Other recs for the Big Island: snorkeling at Mauna Lani (you don’t have to be a guest there to access the beach) and Captain Cook Monument (the hike is completely and totally worth it but try to time your walk back uphill from the shore with a cooler portion of the day), roadside bakery stands (an insanely good one right near Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park had some coffee brownies I still think about) and fruit stands, Kimura Lauhala, Manago Restaurant, Foodland for poke and really anything, Hilo Farmer’s Market vendors (I especially loved the crafts there).
