Little Poetry Chapbooks
•••
These card-sized, gemlike poetry anthologies explore almost every imaginable subject from owls to mothers to chocolate. I just nabbed this soccer one for my daughter's boyfriend. They're beautifully printed on heavy paper and come complete with a handsome bookmark. Pretty much a perfect little gift for any occasion.

A Bookstore, But Make it Outside
•••
Any good bookstore has its own claim to literary fame, and Bart's Books in Ojai, California, boasts a stellar one: it's the largest outdoor bookstore in the world with 150,000+ new and used titles. This is not an oh-let's-just-pop-in-for-a-minute place; you'll need to settle in for proper, leisurely browsing. Just be sure to leave with enough time to catch the sunset because by some phenomenon of light and...dust?...the Topatopa mountains will be bathed in brilliant pinks and purples for a few stunning moments. I'm not making this up.

Reading What You Already Have
•••
There is nothing as satisfying as reading a book that has waited patiently, sometimes years, for you to pluck it off your shelf or pull it from the bottom of your tbr stack. Unsure of what to read on a recent flight, I grabbed the classic A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (purchased circa 2021) on my way out the door. Best decision ever! And another reminder that we often already have exactly what we need.

Classic Summer Reading
•••
Every summer I choose a classic novel to read or re-read. This year I'm leaning towards The Count of Monte Cristo, though the time commitment is giving me pause. Other possibilities so far: The Satanic Verses, Stoner, Song of Solomon. I like the thinking and panelists behind this list from the Center for Fiction, so I'm using it to search for a few more contenders. What's on your summer reading list?

A San Francisco Icon
•••
Green Apple Books doesn't love me the way I love it, but that's okay. Over the past 40+ years I have purchased hundreds of books at the Clement St. location (the sparkly new one on the other side of the park is nice, but come on), spent weeks of my life wandering the shelves and shopping the tables, and pointed friends, strangers, and enemies in its direction. All without any bookseller ever greeting me or offering similar niceties. On the contrary I am, at best, invisible at Green Apple Books. At worst, I sense a begrudging acceptance, a resigned oh-I-guess-she's-one-of-us vibe. It's hilarious and I love it. Long live Green Apple Books.
