Take a Photo Before It Breaks

I found this petite serving dish 30+ years ago in Paris and instantly formed an unhealthy attachment to it. These things happen; they cannot be explained. It's a bit faded now, as am I, and the day may come when it doesn't survive a dinner service. If that happens it comforts me to know I won't need to rely on memory alone to recall the small happiness it brought to me and my table.

"Mom Songs" Playlists

I'm fascinated by the "Mom Songs" playlist my twenty-six-year-old daughter recently sent to me. Her point of reference is clearly the turn of the century, and a third of the tracks are spot-on: Hard Candy by Counting Crows, Crash by DMB, and okay I will own up to 100 Years by Five for Fighting. But...Colbie Caillat? Multiple showings (multiple!) by The Goo Goo Dolls? When I asked for insight into her choices she said, "I don't know. They just feel like you." For years I thought I was the coolest breastfeeder on the block, but turns out I was--and remain to this day--a very corny squishball type of mom.

My Eyes Adored You - Fujii Kaze

A little niche, maybe, but nothing perks up my ears more than an excellent cover of an unabashedly super corny love song. Listen to Fujii Kaze lend his all-vibes-all-the-time persona to Frankie Valli's bittersweet ballad from 1974, when the ladies were foxy and the cats were cool. Or something like that.

The Leopard

I have not read the classic novel. I have not seen the classic film. But I saw this take, and I'll probably watch it over and over again. Garibaldi's redshirts are about to unite Italy, thus bringing to an end the decadent existence of Sicilian nobility. Follow along as our titular leopard, aka the fabulous Prince of Salina, attempts to navigate his family through treacherous times. There is a love triangle for the ages, betrayals galore, an exhausted priest and a choir of nuns, decaying splendor, swoon-worthy costumes, and gorgeous, sweeping cinematography. I'm breathless just writing about it.
