This men’s wear shop with a mix of vintage and new items in Portland Maine will absolutely have something dreamy for your collection. Stopped in recently and tried on an excellent pair of thrashed vintage Levi’s. My brother in law grabbed a pair of hemp shorts that are high quality. We chatted casually with the way too hip shop owner about vintage moto jackets, of which they had MANY.

Excellent cocktail bar. We have a rule in our house that you don’t get cocktails anywhere that doesn’t run a serious program. Something I learned in hospitality, specifically from cocktail Arteest Joy Flanagan, is that cocktail mixing is an art. Everyone is charging an arm and a leg for cocktails but only some people are making drinks that are actually worth 15-25$ a piece. Don’t be a chump, only order cocktails when it’s clear they are putting the work in.

Eventide another classic and you know they’re classics for a reason. I wouldn’t necessarily go here for oysters not that there’s anything wrong with that but I have a preferred oyster spot. Here I would go for other small plates and some fun drink options.

Central Provisions
•••
Central provisions is a Portland maine classic I don’t think it’s what it once was but it’s certainly worth going to at least once. I always love the atmosphere. Typically we would sit at the bar, order a couple small plates and a drink, maybe as part of a split lunch which we like to do a lot where you actually have half a lunch at one place and half a lunch at another.

I love strata, I have four knives purchased from them and many other amazing culinary goodies like my binchotan grill. They have an elite selection of cookbooks (imo). They carry smithy iron ware pans. They have personal relationships with knife makers all over the world. So they carry excellent quality knives. Plus there is always a guy there willing to talk to you about knives for as long as you want.

I love a little market. Put me anywhere and I will find a great little market! This one is a favorite of mine. Incredible cheese selection. They will gladly feed you samples and talk about cheese till you find what you need. Beautiful selection of other goodies as well. All you could need one stop shop for a charcuterie board that would impress just about everyone.

Crispygai
•••
I only recently got to try crispy gai for the first time but damn I am counting the days till I return because my god. We went during the day and got the tom yum fries (to die) with allllll the sauces. Yes I love a fry and a sauce flight. But I think my favorite combo was the NJS ranch. My sneaky favorite thing was a very unassuming cabbage salad that I didn’t anticipate hitting like it did. We also had the wings which were top tier! I can’t wait to go back and try ALL the things.

Mami is such a no fuss spot with great grub. And no wonder because they started as a food truck. The chicken karaage is an every time thing for sure. I also love the age mash but I’m a big eggplant girl and I know that can be controversial for people.

Izakaya Minato

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the entire world. It gets busy and they don’t take reservations. small plates and everything is so yummy. We always order a bottle of sake, cold and unfiltered is my personal favorite. It’s a little more sweet in general than filtered. They bring out a tray of hand made (and all unique) sake cups and let you pick which one you want to drink out of, how freaking amazing is that?! Unfortunately I went recently and I felt like it wasn’t AS good as it had been but still 10/10. Just goes to show you how good it has been in the past. But honestly with the current food prices you can’t blame restaurants for hurting.

Nova Res Bier Cafe
•••
This is a beer lovers local. For a few years I worked at a world renowned beer bar and farm to table restaurant that had a serious beer program, I mean a thick binder worth of beer knowledge I had to know backwards and forwards before I started serious. Every shift you taste tested and discussed every new beer that had been tapped since your last shift and there were 30 taps of serious craft beer. We were one of the only places that had hill farmstead on draft and if you know you know that’s impressive af in the beer world. In my time there I became arguably obsessed with beer. I probably tried 3000 unique beers easy. I would frequent breweries all over New England. This is the type of place people like that go. It’s cozy and low key but you can get some incredible beers and some hearty food items. We usually got food elsewhere since there is so much to chose from but this is a solid stop for a drink or two.

I enjoy this little coffee shop slash gift shop. It has a great harbor view, perched up on a hill overlooking the ocean. DUCKFAT
•••
I have been to the duck fat restaurant several times and it’s excellent but the real star for me will always be the fries. These days I skip the rigmarole and just go straight to the frites shack at Oxbow brewing. You HAVE TO get ALL the sauces, no really they have a sauce flight and you can’t not get a sauce flight when there is a sauce flight. We always stop here and grab a couple Oxbow beers while we are at it, since they are 10/10.

The Shop by Island Creek Oysters
•••
This is the place I always stop for oysters when I am in Portland Maine. It’s about as straight forward as it gets. A variety of oysters, some tin fish options, and 3 or 4 other little things (like a chip and dip). They serve a few unique non alcoholic drinks and a few alcoholic. Usually we get a dozen maybe two and a frozen lemonade cocktail. It’s the perfect little stop.
