The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats (1962)

I like to get this for the kiddos who experience winter and snow. The illustrations bring the mysterious magic of snow in a city to life. You can hear the crunching of snow underfoot. Then the gut punch of Peter not finding the snowball he saved for later in his pocket. I’m happy to read this one ten times in a row.

After visiting I made a joke about how she was the original influencer. Her rock assemblages are elite. Apparently one time one of the dudes who worked for her tried swap out some of the rocks as a prank, and she noticed right away and put them back to their rightful places.

Secret Stairs by Charles Fleming (2010)

If you live in LA you MUST get this book and do the walks. The first week we moved there someone let us borrow theirs and it changed our lives. As you do the guided walks (map and narrative directions included for each), you encounter neighborhoods that are off the main drag and learn lots of history tidbits along the way. Charles has a way of throwing crucial directions next to some fascinating story about Raymond Chandler and making you miss your turn. But that’s the beauty of staircase walks; sometimes you double back and see the view from two different vantage points. It makes me feel that there’s some hidden treasure around any corner.

It's very simple and feels sturdy. You can hook it onto a bag strap so you don't have to dig around forever in your bag for your keys. I just took the logo plate off so it's very anonymous. I actually had bought a similar keychain but it had a screw-on component that unscrewed and my keys fell into the car as I was getting out, forcing me to call a locksmith to unlock my car! Never again!!!

Angel’s Landing (Zion National Park in Utah)

In hindsight, the view and the experience makes up for the scariest hike I’ve ever done. I almost chickened out before the final part but saw an elderly Asian couple with matching hats coming back with big smiles on their faces and I had to do it.

Sorry my favorite bird would kick your favorite bird’s ass in a fight. They steal fish from fishermen, have the most mournful calls, and carry their baby on their backs. Just graphically so crisp and beautiful. Perfect birds.

Changes (2016) by Charles Bradley

I've been listening to this album and his voice just hits all of the feelings known to humankind. Didn't realize the title track "Changes" is a Black Sabbath cover, but he fully bodies it. The song makes me feel either full despair or cloud-parting nostalgia. If you like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (who also worked with Amy Winehouse), they were on the same record label. RIP to two legends. Here he is doing a stripped down version in the Toronto Star office (??). You know he's a true soul star by the amount of sweat and tears rolling into his wrinkles. I love everything about this.

A documentary about Jonathan Gold, the legendary LA food critic. To me the beating heart of the city of Los Angeles is the food culture. Seeing small immigrant restaurants in strip malls and food trucks just is quintessential LA.

A movie where I felt like both main characters. The Midwestern summer is palpable and comforting to me. Watched this movie before going to Columbus, Indiana, where it was filmed. The small city is a treasure trove of Modernist architecture because Joseph Irwin Miller, the chairman of the biggest company in the town, was wealthy with good taste. (this type of person has gone extinct, imo) He also believed that good architecture and art should be accessible to everyone. Highly recommended you spend a weekend there drooling over these buildings, walking around at night looking into lit-up buildings from the outside forlornly.

A very good basic burger and fries. Actually the fries are waaaay better than almost all fast food restaurants. I love real potatoes with skin! The signs also, waaaay better than almost all fast food restaurants. And the fact that it's Redhot and not Red Hot.

I am truly sorry there aren't more episodes of this show. Every actor on this show has perfect comedic timing! People have asked why I was laughing so hard, and it was because I was watching this show. The biggest twist is that Officer Goodnight and Officer Turner are married in real life.

Harold Washington Library Winter Garden (Chicago)

Some of the other floors of the Harold Washington Library are kind of meh to me, but the top floor “Winter Garden” is so gorgeous it makes up for it. You can go read or study or have a coffee under the glass dome next to some trees. Love that they painted the walls green to match the external ornamentation.

Inciting Joy by Ross Gay (2022)

I adore Ross Gay, his writing hits me squarely in my urban garden heart. I went to hear him speak and someone asked about how he juxtaposes humor and grief in one sentence, and he said something like it is joy carrying each other’s sorrows. And life is devastating. He also said teaching is how to notice things, and I could not agree more as a teacher. Please read! And feel your soul be replenished and affirmed. And get a few cackles in, too.

In the step-by-step portion of the tour, you get to stand under a vent that emits incredible chocolate air. Highly recommended for people who love watching factory videos.

I saw a friend in architecture school use this and was immediately convinced that's why he was really good at architecture school. I got them and did not get better at architecture school! But you can do menial tasks and precision artsy-fartsy stuff. I have a few of these lying around at all times and actually have flown to other countries with one in my carry on (?!); I just forgot I had it in my bag.

When this came out people were talking about how this was such a cathartic show in the midst of our collective COVID-19 trauma. Did we learn anything? Maybe not. I cried so much watching it that I haven’t tried rewatching it. Incredible post-apocalyptic Chicago scenes in mostly winter, then around Lake Michigan in summer. Obviously my favorite character is Frank!!!

A solid travel mug that fits into backpack pockets and cup holders in cars. I’ve had this mug for maybe 7-8 years, using it daily for long stretches, and it’s now finally beginning to leak. I am sad about that but grateful it lasted this long!

It feels like you’re in the town and in the lake when you read this book. You can feel the cold and lonesomeness. The landscape and the weather are the grief the women are feeling, but not expressing in a way anyone else can accept. I kinda want to read it again even though I just read it.
