I try really hard to not say “Good job” to my students (who are young children) because Alfie Kohn’s praise vs. encouragement philosophy really got to me when I was a younger teacher. To scratch that itch without making kids external-motivation-praise-addicts, I like to thank them when they help me or are kind to each other. Because I am grateful, and even young kids should know that their actions are appreciated by others.

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats (1962)

I like to get this for the kiddos who experience winter and snow. The illustrations bring the mysterious magic of snow in a city to life. You can hear the crunching of snow underfoot. Then the gut punch of Peter not finding the snowball he saved for later in his pocket. I’m happy to read this one ten times in a row.
