The Swimmer
•••
This is one of the greatest movies ever made. Burt Lancaster peak performance and slept on in a very serious way. Incredible Cheever adaptation that is just as relevant now as it was at the time of its release.

I Am a Sex Addict (2006)

I love Caveh and have recently even labored for him (strange experience…) this is easily the best thing I’ve seen of his. So batshit, so funny, so uncomfortable. It’s amazing filmmaking.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
•••
Love this movie, obviously, but posting as a Peak Performance for Mr. Philip Seymour Hoffman. Just an absolute scoundrel in this movie and I can’t get enough of it. Tommy, how’s the peeping?

Deer Tick - Dirty Dishes (2011)
•••
Deer Tick is my longstanding FBOAT (Favorite Band of All Time) and this is my favorite song of theirs, and also a peak performance. Frontman John McCauley is like a greasy drunken angel who was sent down from heaven to chain smoke Marlboro reds and write beautiful music. He’s also one of the best performers I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen them live 10+ times and this is a performance that captures the energy of the band beautifully. Love them forever.

The Piano Teacher (2001)
•••
Maybe one of my most obvious choices, but this is truly peak Isabelle Huppert. She is just a ruthless sicko in this movie and crafts one of the most intense and uncomfortable performances I’ve ever seen. I watched this on a plane. I don’t totally recommend that but it certainly proved to be a thrilling experience.

Down by Law (1986)
•••
Roberto Bernigni is a god-tier performer and we are lucky to have him on our earth. He is particularly excellent in his 1997 Oscar-Winner, Life is Beautiful, but in my opinion, few things beat his performance in Down by Law. I would say that few characters have made me cackle harder than Bernigni in this movie, and when you see it you will understand why. It’s an obvious Jarmusch pick and maybe obvious for all three of the leads, but wow, I will never get sick of this one.

Big Night (1996)
•••
Believe me when I say it: you have never seen Stanley Tucci like this. Peak Tucci is a disgruntled Italian immigrant in 1950s America who’s trying to prevent his restaurant from collapsing. It’s made even better with Tony Shalhoub playing his stubborn, “food is high art” brother AND because it’s co-directed by Tucci. Absolute must watch! Good for the heart and soul!

What's Up Doc? (1972)

Masterclass in screwball comedy starring Barbara Streisand (goat of all goats). This is peak Barbara performance, artfully pulled in by Peter Bogdanovich. Made me fall in love with her all over again.

To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)
•••
This is absolutely peak Dafoe in what feels like a pure 80s movie. It’s pure gas in spite of a pretty flimsy plot line and has some all time one-liners that I find myself saying more and more. LOVE!!!!
