I have already rec’d a Caveh film but if you are interested in doing a deep dive on one of the most unique documentary filmmakers of our time, this is the place. For $8/month you can watch, read, and listen to his entire body of work on demand or on loop from start to finish. The tagline? “Watch him age and die.” It’s genius.

The Swimmer
•••
This is one of the greatest movies ever made. Burt Lancaster peak performance and slept on in a very serious way. Incredible Cheever adaptation that is just as relevant now as it was at the time of its release.

I Am a Sex Addict (2006)

I love Caveh and have recently even labored for him (strange experience…) this is easily the best thing I’ve seen of his. So batshit, so funny, so uncomfortable. It’s amazing filmmaking.

Threads (1984)
•••
This is single-handedly the most damning and impactful piece of anti-war filmmaking I’ve ever seen (closely followed by Grave of the Fireflies and The Deer Hunter). In Sheffield, UK, this documentary-fiction starts two weeks before a nuclear apocalypse and follows the small city through 14 years of nuclear fallout. It demonstrates the very tangible consequences of nuclear war, including a very acute portrayal of a nuclear winter. Easily the most terrifying film I’ve ever seen and goes without saying, but extremely important right now.

SKAM
•••
Skam is like the Norwegian Skins but it’s a little more “up with the times.” For lovers of an excellent teen drama with a little bit of nostalgia. I’d like to thank my college girlfriend for introducing me to this show when we were 19 and helping me find the google drive links for each episode that were bootlegged and MANUALLY SUBTITLED by some savior in Norway. Now, all the links are conveniently aggregated on this slightly less bootleg site. Thinking it’s time for a rewatch.

Eric Rohmer's Tales of the Four Seasons
$99
•••
One of the most important details about me is that I am a true Eric Rohmer loyalist. No director has ever been able to capture the nuances of messy situationships in your 20s through such an artful lens. Not only this, Rohmer is a tried and true philosophy scholar who manages to integrate his love for it into his dialogue effortlessly. It takes the “sitting around and debating for four hours” nature of being French to the next level and I have yet to see someone do it better than him.
