The Bureau (Le bureau des légendes)
•••
Not just the best espionage show of all time but one of the greatest shows ever in any genre. A thrilling series about the secret world of spies. The intrigue. The complex and conflicted characters, major and minor, who are superbly portrayed. The skullduggery and political game playing. The fantastic production and the killer soundtrack. The Bureau is a show to sink into and savour. I’ve watched it twice and will watch it again soon because I find myself thinking about it often and most other series seem trite in comparison (especially the extraneous US remake).

Selftape (2023)

A beautiful series about Catalan sisters Joana and Mireia Vilapuig. The series is dramatised but it's based on their actual lives as former child stars grappling with the challenges of life in their 20s - careers, relationships, identity, and the brutal film industry. At the centre of the story is the complicated and stoic relationship of the sisters. It's quite moving and personal, unlike anything I've seen really. Probably hard to find outside of Spain's FilmIn platform but I highly recommend it if you can access it!

The Legacy

Not so much oddball but for snobby and smarty you cant beat quality European drama. 2014 Danish series The Legacy is an all time favourite show but quite hard to find now. Fantastic acting, writing and characters. I’m certain it influenced Jesse Armstrong’s creation of Succession. Worth getting on physical media perhaps! A few other favourite European series that should be more accessible: Secrets(2024 Danish series); Borgen; The Orchestra (funny snd oddball); I, Addict; The Day (Belgian heist series)

Heist TV seems to be having a moment and it doesn't get much bigger than this, in terms of both the scale of the real life crime and the production of the series. The story of the Brinks-Mat robbery and it's subsequent long, long tail is a gripping yarn that unfolded across decades and multiple continents, told here over two seasons of top shelf crime TV. It's a super stylised affair - nigh on every scene seems to have some character profoundly speechifying - but the intrigue is relentless and there's plenty of south London grit to balance out the lustre of the production.

The Gallows Pole

A recent A24 series directed by Shane Meadows, this is a curious and often very funny journey into ye olde weird England. At just 3 episodes it feels like it may as well have been a film but the longer run time does provide space for extended improvised banter and lush scene setting in and around the 1860s Yorkshire village. A dark comic caper of redemption and resistance, featuring some great performances and a killer psychedelic soundtrack.
