Crisis Acting
•••
“the psychic map of right now” The only essential Instagram follow. It was at one point suspended but, joyfully, has now resurfaced. A summary from Triple Canopy: “Crisis Acting posted found footage from every conceivable node of the web a couple of times each week. Crisis Acting’s collages and carousels presented natural disasters and astonishing sunsets; noise shows, raves, and ritual dances; massive industrial machines, military manoeuvres, and protests; bits of Oddly Satisfying Content, random shenanigans, and people gathering to celebrate and mourn. Though the anonymous artist behind the account didn’t shy away from the realities of war, climate collapse, and other forms (and scales) of cruelty, there’s something hopeful about the world portrayed in Crisis Acting’s juxtapositions of earthly beauty and human ingenuity.”

Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard
•••
New streaming radio station from the stalwart music blog Aquarium Drunkard. As with Dust To Digital it offers a stream of constant music - psych, alt pop, folk, some jazz - nothing too esoteric. Enjoyed what I heard on first couple of listens. The app provides a backlist of songs played and you can save favourites. Only catch is that an Apple Music sub is required.

Streaming search tool for VPN users
•••
Handy site for VPN users - search the availability of any show or movie on streaming platforms across the globe when you’re using a VPN. The site has a paid tier but for works fine for basic searches. There’s also a browsing function to see what’s available on platforms in other countries besides your own:

Audials Play : Radio App
•••
I’ve been enjoying listening to more radio and less podcasts. Audials is an app for streaming just about any radio station in the world and it’s totally free, no paid tiers or ads. It won’t win any design awards but functions perfectly well as a pocket radio.

JustWatch
•••
My go-to app for keeping track of what’s streaming in tv and film. Super simple and effective functionality: add your streaming platforms of choice to see what’s available to stream, sortable by new and popular. It’s my main tool for saving stuff that I’m interested in watching, easy to make custom lists for both film and tv. Good tool for discovery too. There’s solid filters for searching at free level, premium (not expensive) gets you loads of options (like the precious run time filter). You can switch between regions so if you use a VPN it’s even more valuable. The App works well on smart tv , I use it like a personally curated tv guide on Apple TV 📺

Five Books
•••
An excellent book recommendation site. Five Books features interviews with folks from the literary world who recommend five books from a chosen genre, which are sometimes quite niche. There’s a huge archive of selections available, making it one of the best online resources for book discovery. Plus it’s all human, algo free! The newsletter is also worth a sub.

Josh fills out the newsletter with recs across other media, plus a nice insight into the Chicago music scene. My newsletter: That 8 Point Star
•••
I ran this newsletter for a few months in 2026: a regular set of recommendations across music, film, podcasts, internet and more. I enjoyed putting it together but I became time poor and it's currently on hiatus, perhaps I'll fire it up again at some stage. The archive remains active for your perusal. (The title is inspired by a lyric from a Jason Molina song)
