Chernobyl
•••
For the longest time I had this on my list and didn’t watch it because, like, who wants to watch a show about this?? It’s exactly the sort of thing you know you should watch and then you click around and put on some cotton candy instead (don’t get me wrong, I love me some cotton candy!). But then I finally watched it and sweet mother of god it’s so frickin’ good and riveting and tense and perfectly cast and acted. And there’s also so much I didn’t know about how close we came to a much worse disaster and the absolute heroics that averted it. Plus the depiction of Soviet bureaucracy, the courage of doing the right thing in that environment, one of the best shows ever, don’t sleep on it as long as I did!

Saying “sit down, relax, have a sandwich, drink a glass of milk, do some f*ckin’ thing” when somebody is worrying too much
•••
Ah the late great Dennis Farina! One of our family idioms for good-naturedly getting somebody to lighten up. Also Midnight Run is a classic. Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin’s rapport is unmatched and also maybe the first time I realized how funny DeNiro could be.

Saying “I’ll get one of my boys up here with a can of WD-40” whenever something goes wrong with the house

Never fails to put a gloss of amusement over something which is almost certainly annoying and/or expensive. Also Galaxy Quest is a perfect film.

Mr. Inbetween
•••
This show has literally nothing to do with Breaking Bad but if you ever wanted a whole show about Mike, but he’s Australian and smiles a lot more, this might be the show you’ve been waiting for. Ah the dilemma: how to have a violent job while raising a tweener daughter, caring for your brother with motor neuron disease, and generally navigating mundanity as we all must? A perfect execution of a classic blueprint.

Supergirl (eff the incels!)
•••
Don’t believe the antihype, Supergirl is a lot of fun and if you don’t want the manosphere deciding what movies get made please give this the late theatrical surge it needs. Milly Alcock is perfect in the role and I so want her to get a sequel.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts
•••
The most criminally underwatched animated show of all time. Wonderful world-building, plot/character/relationship arcs, representation, found family dynamic, soundtrack, satisfying final season and conclusion. Kindness as a pervading theme but real re its limitations. Neck-and-neck with AtLA for all-time fav.

Finds its legs immediately, very funny right from the first ep (imo), no on-ramp, so only 30 minutes to decide if it’s for you or not.
