There is incredible footage of birds, being on the road, and an unexpected dissection of the toxic gamification of “listing”. It was peculiar to observe such competitive behavior within a nature-based hobby that I wouldn’t have expected to be so cagey and particular. It’s a glimpse into the world and ethics of birdwatching, and also an honest reflection of the vast weirdness of America. I will think about this movie for a long time!”

“good god. guys - I saw the trailer for this on reels. Thought the trailer looked funny, homemade, and like something I would do. For context: this guy gets high one evening and looks at a coffee book that entails all of the birds in North America. He wonders how cool it must be to know all of them. He decides to ensue his next year getting into birdwatching just for shits and giggles; and figures the best way to start is by going for the biggest challenge in all of birdwatching, a “big year”. It starts as this sort of joke that he will be the best at in the US at birdwatching but you honestly just get so consumed with it as it goes on. Loved it. So good. Two hours went by so fast. Must watch.”

“If you haven't watched Listers, I highly recommend blocking off 2 hours for this beauty. I am not a bird watcher but this definitely made me more interested in watching birds! And also watching bird-watchers, a hilarious bunch. This is mostly a human story about two brothers--complete amateur birders--on a quest to see as many birds as they can in one year while living out of a minivan.”

It's a documentary (that they've made free to watch on YouTube!) about the world of birding, something I did not think I would care about. It's charming, informative and clearly made with a lot of love.”

It was clear that 1) they don’t fit the way typical birders looked, 2) they were determined, taking on the burden of sleeping in a Cracker Barrel’s parking lot in a sketchy makeshift bed setup in their old van in the pursuit of the next “lifer” and 3) it was a pure hearted almost child-like interest in the process of birding that was contagious. I downloaded Merlin bird ID shortly after watching this and now log the birds that fly up to our kitchen window by the sink.”

“I come from a family of birders, all our family vacations involved some element of birding. I’m guessing unlike a lot of viewers, I am well aware of the strange and specific world of ornithology. What I loved about this doc was how hard they worked at this seemingly random self imposed task. They committed fully to such a specific, time consuming, challenging, and expensive goal. And they revealed how many people are doing the same thing every year. They were not making fun of the birding community, not mocking anyone. Just giving their all, revealing the weird stuff along with the beautiful stuff!”
