“You can learn a few local species by going on a community bird walk and meeting the friendly nerds. They’ll probably let you borrow their binoculars. Listening to people who are passionate about it is a lot of fun! You can also go by yourself. Your local lake likely has more kinds of ducks than you would have expected. Look up the species! Maybe you can learn which is male and female. Spending a few minutes in nature is good for ya. Also, who cares if you’re good at it or not? Literally no one. And that’s good for the soul.”

“I recently started looking at birds more.. now my life has turned into Pokémon go irl. Every time I step out into my backyard, go on walks, a hike, etc.. it makes it so much more fun. It’s so exciting to find a cool looking bird, and you start to realize how crazy it is that these little guys are just always around you. I’m so in deep I just bought a pair of binoculars. “Merlin” is a good app to start - it can listen to the bird calls around you and tells you what bird they are coming from. I highly recommend going on a walk, pull Merlin out, and see if you can spot anything cool.”
