Donuts (2006)

"Donuts" is a love letter written by J Dilla to his family, friends, and music. Crafted primarily on a hospital bed, J Dilla worked tirelessly on this project knowing this would be his "farewell" before succumbing to his illness. Starting with "Donuts (Outro)" and ending with "Welcome to the Show", the album is intended to be a loop (hence the name "Donuts", teehee).
The first time I sat down and listened to Donuts, I read about J Dilla, his life, his passions, the process of creating the album, and what he wanted to communicate with it. Halfway through, I was bawling. It takes a one-of-a-kind person to curate these samples and arrange them in such a unique way. I don't try to pretend I understand the art of production, but I know enough to recognize the skill and intelligence it would take to make Donuts.
I love the off-kilter "degraded" (I hesitate to say "lo-fi" because I'm pretty sure that is a controversial take) sound throughout the album. It is so warm, passionate, and booming with life (Best example of this: "Time: The Donut of the Heart").
