Well if you live in Chapel Hill or Carrboro you almost certainly already know about this gem of a restaurant, but if you have somehow missed it you gotta go!! It’s so cozy and the food is perfect. If you aren’t stuffed by dessert those are really good too. I once ate a very delicious, slightly salty ricotta ice cream with chocolate chips here that I still think about often. If you happen to be throwing an extremely cool and intimate party or wedding reception it’s perfect for that too (was lucky enough to attend a buddy’s wedding celebration here a few years ago and it was 🔥). Also the focaccia is served with olive oil AND butter. If you’re not sold on this place after all that then you’re hopeless.

The Philly roast pork is definitely in the running for the best sandwich I’ve ever had!! And TBH I don’t remember what else is even competing with it. When the pork, mayo and broccoli rabe come together beautiful things happen! 🤩🤩🤩

This place is very cool!! It was definitely a highlight of my trip to Lisbon. This isn't exactly a Fado bar, but it's a great place to see live music (including some Fado). I don't know if it's exactly a "locals" sort of place (we were there as well as many other tourists), but it's a lovely, intimate venue and we were surrounded by folks who turned out to be some of the performers. The music starts LATE so I would recommend going once you are over the worst of your jet lag. My only regret about this experience is that I left before it was over and missed what I'm sure were some great performances.

Fitness at The Cube - Chapel Hill

This is a relatively new gym in CH and so far I really dig it! It’s got very good vibes and great instructors (based on the 2 I’ve met so far). I can be sort of weary of fitness spaces since they can be intense and have weird diet-y vibes, but this one is very welcoming/friendly. I’ve taken their Barre Chisel class and their Mat Strength class and really enjoyed both. I have never tried Barre before so I was intimidated, but it felt very accessible for beginners despite being a challenging class. They have a variety of classes available including Pilates, Zumba and TRX and I’m very interested to check out more soon. Right now they are on ClassPass and I think they also have an intro offer so you can try it out.

OK Zion in general is absolutely magical and you should do all of the things you already know about (Especially hiking the narrows), but I think this is a sleeper amazing activity. This was our first introduction to the park because we did it when we first got to town and I thought it was awesome. We rode on a trail by the river and then the whole road through the park. If you are there when the shuttles are running this is especially cool because you can stop in a lot of places that you couldn’t on the shuttle. And it feels cool and sporty, but you have a little help for the fairly large hills in the park. Also, since we were there when the shuttles were running there wasn’t a lot of traffic to dodge which made it feel more safe and relaxing. I think we probably also did this at golden hour which added to the magic.

I also just highly recommend going to the movies in general (preferably with a large amount of popcorn and maybe a cherry icee). This local movie theater is especially delightful though. It's the sort of great indie spot that will be the only place around showing some weirdo movie you want to see (ex- Maddie's Secret). It also feels like more of a communal experience than my average trip to the movies. It's small, but has comfy seats. Watching The Substance there with a big group (probably a bunch of retired UNC professors tbh) was one of my best movie watching experiences ever.

I am a key lime pie enthusiast and I am PICKY about my key lime pie. The most important factor is that it has to be TART! I have had far too many key lime pies that lack this essential element and they are sad!! This pie is consistently perfect AND it is huge. Why didn’t anyone tell me before that Key Lime Pie could be the height of a cheesecake!?! It’s genius! As a an extra bonus they will sell you a whole or half pie that you can enjoy all week while you’re on the outer banks. I have never actually set foot in this restaurant or tried anything else from them, but please don’t sleep on the pie. This pie was my birthday cake this year.

This is my FAVORITE restaurant in Carrboro!! Which is not a huge place, but has many great restaurants. I would say it’s my top pick in Orange County at least (maybe the whole triangle). It has the best food, the warmest vibes, the most lovely staff and very tasty Lambrusco. I can’t say enough great things about this spot! I will say that if you take this rec DON’T only order pizza. If you think of this as strictly a pizza place, you are missing the point. The pizza is wonderful, but ordering appetizers and possibly dessert is essential to having the full Mercato experience. They are very serious about getting amazing vegetables and they do magical things with them. I’ve had some of my favorite salads ever here (s/o warm shelling beans salad and winter lettuce salad). This menu has some old standbys, but also has a lot of movement which is nice and especially great if you find yourself becoming regular. The desserts are excellent too. The lemon custard cake is one of my all-time favorite desserts (I actually got engaged next to a lemon custard cake). Their budino is also legendary. Did I mention that it’s not extremely expensive though it feels like a really fabulous restaurant??? OK, I will shut up now, but you guys should all go here!

This is the perfect wine bar! I stumbled into it after trying and failing to park in downtown Durham and desperately seeking out a bar that had parking AND snacks. It was an extremely happy accident as this place has very tasty natural wine and impeccable vibes. It’s the sort of place you can get very personalized recs (even if you like me are wine dumb). I also really recommend the snacks especially the bean one. If you’re looking for a lovely date night spot to try some funky wines you gotta check it out.

This is the best Mexican food truck in Carrboro! It’s probably the best food truck in Carrboro period (though when the Ethiopian truck comes to town it gets a run for its money). I don’t think I’ve ever had anything here that wasn’t delicious, but the tacos are particularly perfect. I am also a big fan of the tortas. It’s got a great vibe with picnic tables, music and a year round fake Christmas tree.

This is my favorite local concert venue. It’s just dreamy! They always have great acts. Not a totally teeny venue, but definitely has an intimate feel. During the day they have a little coffee shop inside the venue where you can hang and look out at the Haw River. This is my happy place. I’ve been lucky enough to go to many shows there, but a seated show with Mountain Man and Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings (who seem to come yearly) stand out as some of the most magical ones.

This is my favorite gym/fitness space ever. They are not only not weird/diet-y they are actively fat positive/super inclusive! They have obviously been so thoughtful about making a welcoming fitness space for folks who may not have felt welcome in these spaces in the past. They got me into strength training after I thought I’d never be into it. I can’t say enough good things about this place. The only way to improve it would be opening another one in Carrboro or Chapel Hill.
