Meals blueberry chef pants
•••
Big. Unisex. Sturdy cotton. I could cry about how big the pockets are. I think of these as a tool belt for my legs. I have been known to carry an apple in each pocket. Tape measure in another. Wooden spoon. Phone. Probably a hammer at one point. I don’t know. I’m busy. Finally, pants that respect me. My husband and I both have a pair. Great color range. I got mine at Nikki Chasin, who has custom colorways too, like Split Pea and elderberry.

Send them scheduled texts
•••
It’s super easy, and you can do it in advance when you have some time and are feeling sentimental! I learned this from Crash Landing on You. 😂 My husband does this when he’s on business trips or in a different time zone than me, so I still get a morning text from him. I think it’s pretty romantic and considerate to know someone was thinking of you in advance. 💜

Getting pieces of eggshell out with the shell itself

Tiny eggshell in the bowl? Scoop it out with a bigger piece of shell. Shell grabs shell. Like attracts like. No fingers required.

Hang out in the airport prayer/meditation room
•••
A surprising number of airports in America have one, and finding them is kind of fun if you have a bit of a layover. Obviously, be respectful, people may actually be in there praying — but a lot of the time they’re empty (I’ve never actually encountered anyone in one). The lights are usually dim, it’s quiet, and having a little space to myself to reset for 15–20 minutes outside the airport chaos is incredibly restorative to my nervous system. I’ll journal or meditate. A lot of them have yoga mats. They also usually have things from different faiths (prayer mats, Tibetan prayer beads, Bible, Quran… you name it) in there, and somehow that is really comforting to me. It’s one of the few places where all the faiths get mixed together into a material spiritual salad. And somehow that feels like the most true thing.

First draft: you’re telling yourself the story
•••
I do a mix of outlining and writing on vibes for the first draft. The other drafts are for making sense of it. Just write the story first, stick loosely to a 3- or 5-act structure, and leave yourself [fix later] notes instead of stopping. Sometimes the first draft is how you figure out what the story actually is.

Baby photo T-shirt of yourself
•••
My friends made T-shirts with my baby photo and wear them all the time (this was a surprise idk why they did this). My husband does too. No idea why, but it’s kind of an unlock. Bonus points for wearing it at work. It does more than you’d expect. It reminds people who they’re talking to. And when you catch yourself in the mirror- you’re literally looking at baby you. It softens me instantly.

Freezing ginger for easy grating

The freezing weakens the fibers and it’s so much easier to grate or microplane.

Imaginary Dad Wisdom
•••
Borrow a dad. A fictional one. I have an imaginary council of father figures I ask for advice when I’m stuck, and it’s such a hack. Turns out you can outsource the wisdom your own dad didn’t have time (or capacity) to give. Mine includes Ron Swanson, Duke Leto Atreides, Merlin, and Jean-Luc Picard…

Bad at making friends? Take an art class or a workshop.
•••
If you’re shy, it’s kind of a cheat code: you’re automatically in a room full of people who already like the same thing you do. Voilà. A friend pool that’s not at a party or work. Doesn’t have to be art… my sister is on the spectrum and takes a rocket building class, whatever you’re interested in, it’s out there.

At the grocery store, buy what’s almost sold out.
•••
In a sea of brands, I look for the one with only one or two left on the shelf. Sometimes I have to peak behind the front product to get a good read; I learned it while living in Belgium when I couldn’t read the labels, then had it reinforced after four years working in a grocery store.

Pan Fry Rotisserie Chicken Skin
•••
Remove slimy skin off a cooled rotisserie chicken and pan fry for 5-10 mins on medium heat (you don’t need to add fat, it fries in its own). Use like bacon: on sandwiches, salads, or just eat it once it’s cooled on a plate. Fried chicken skin on a chicken salad sandwich is next level.

Linen or silk bloomers in summer
•••
It’s getting increasingly hard to find natural fabric underwear that let the flaps breathe on the hottest days. These do that. Cheaper when you buy a mystery color box. My other faves are Natori bliss, used to love negative undies but now they use rayon blend.

And like a tablespoon of butter, lard, or duck fat as you’re heating it up. This is the way my Mexican father taught me. For some reason it’s amazing. Make tacos or dip chips accordingly.

Salmon 🍣 🥑 Seaweed Rice (gf)
•••
I make this once or twice a month when I’m just too tired to cook(emergency meal). Uplevel is adding furikake. Takes 5 mins if you keep instant microwave rice on hand. Even canned salmon or tuna works. *If celiac you know this already, but use gf soy sauce/tamari.

Eating potato chips with chopsticks
•••
I saw my audhd sister doing this one evening. Laughed at her, and she responded: “so I don’t get grease on my hands, or crumbs on the couch, and it’s more fun.” Shes a genius. I’ve never looked back.

Flossing in the shower
•••
I even keep it in the shower with a jug of purified or distilled water (I have hard water), so instead of forgetting to floss it just becomes 40 seconds of extra shower splash time, and I don’t have to lean over a sink or deal with floss.
