Zelda
•••
When my sister went through a breakup, I flew to Seattle for two weeks because she was barely eating. Our communication was basically sitting on the couch playing Zelda together. Honestly, genius breakup game. It’s beautiful, it gets you out of your head, and it forces you to relearn how to do little list-oriented tasks when your brain has forgotten how to do anything. I left, she bought herself a Switch and Zelda, and kept playing. For those acute times when you need to dip in and out of psychological pain, Zelda is so comfy and cozy. It gives your brain somewhere else to go for a while.

Getting to play co-op games with your boo at the end of a long day is kind of the best. This is our latest fun run. I really look forward to it.

Whispers of the House

Probably the closest to unpacking game I’ve found. Just played the first hour and I’m hooked! Very pretty. There’s also a supernatural vibe going on.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
•••
OFC I’m gonna rec a game that Studio Ghibli animated. And Ghibli composer Joe Hisaishi wrote the score. It’s whimsical and feels like playing a film. JRPG, creature collecting (Pokémon vibes), turn based. You do grind a bit to level up.

Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood

The witchiest game ever, I played on switch. Your fate changes based on your choices, so every playthrough is different. You get to make your own tarot deck and that’s literally where your power comes from??? The graphics are insane. Beat it in a couple hours, then immediately played again as a different kind of witch (a badder one).

Midnight snack

The 70s version of a Dutch still life. Also made me want to make and eat everything in here. Except maybe… the corn. If I had to pick something in the puzzle to eat it would probably be the sashimi bowl.

Unpacking Game
•••
Looks innocent. Is not. The things we collect in life tell stories. Won’t spoil it, but, you’re helping this invisible character unpack her life as she moves and grows older. Wasn’t expecting the narrative of unpacking to make me feel so much. Wistful. Happy. Curious. Angry rage?! Love.

Journey

Completely visual storytelling. No hand holding in this game. No words in this game. You stitch the narrative together yourself, you use your actual brain. Magical, gorgeous animation. The soundtrack alone will makes you tear up, it’s so good. Very easy. All ages can and should play.

Coffee Talk
•••
Basically a visual novel disguised as a cozy coffee shop simulator.I have it on switch. Alternate universe where you make coffee for the wider monster population of Seattle. The stories you get from your customers are awesome. The ending surprised me. Took about 2-3 hours to finish bc it took me a while to understand that when I got someone’s order right it unlocked more of their storyline as a reward.

JFK Jr. as a Dad in the Sims
•••
Everyone has their unhinged way of playing the sims. Lately I’ve enjoyed giving famous people that have passed - lives beyond the veil. I can report JFK Jr. and Carolyn are doing great, have a son and a daughter, a huge ranch, and very successful substacks.
