Diaspora spices
•••
YALL! Incredible spice company with the freshest most flavorful and life changing spices. I cannot possibly convey in words the SMELL of the cinnamon and ginger, the addictive-ness of the gunpowder podi and taco seasoning, the way they make everything taste better…the rose petals!! They can have all my money.

Sally’s Baking Addiction Chocolate Cake
•••
Our amazing friend who is a talented baker made this for my wife’s birthday and we were obsessed. This year she was out of town so we made it ourselves and it was so fantastic. We did it as a sheet cake but the moistness and flavor are unreal.

Spicy Cucumber Salad (Jeffrey Alford & Naomi Duguid)
•••
This salad is EVERYTHING!!!! Balanced, fresh, spicy, addictive. I eat it over and over. Lightly pickling the smashed cucumbers in rice vinegar with some sugar, pouring over this chili oil with Szechuan peppercorns, and then the fresh green taste from the cilantro. And the leftover sauce is drinkable and so good over rice.

Smitten Kitchen Buffalo Chicken Salad
•••
Deb knows her shit and this salad is AMAZING. Great for meal prep because you can just store everything seperately. I’ve made it many times with rotisserie chicken. ALSO I make the salad without the buffalo chicken as a crunchy wholesome side to hot honey lemon pepper wings (Atl baby)

Lemon zest in the freezer
•••
Any time I need just the juice of a lemon I peel the zest with a veg peeler and throw the zest in my big lemon zest freezer bag. Easy to grab and chop for a sauce or salad or dip or if I’m out of lemons and need that flavor. I also keep the spent lemon halves in another bag in the freezer to make lemonade with this amazing syrup: https://www.seriouseats.com/fresh-lemon-syrup-recipe

Tomato salad from Chez Fonfon
•••
This is my hyperfixation since I ate at Chez Fonfon in Birmingham Alabama, one of the best meals I’ve had in the past few years. This salad was life changing: ripe tomato seasoned w flaky salt and black pepper, light dressing w finely chopped shallots, olive oil, a bit of cucumber basil and castelvetrano olives and then this extremely lovely local goat cheese. I’ve been recreating at my house. Heavenly.

TAMALES
•••
If you have them in the freezer truly it’s just the time it takes to microwave. Me and my work wife would go scout for tamale ladies in parking lots on the weekend then put a huge ziplock of tamales in our work freezer for last minute breakfasts. My favorite of all time is Rajas with poblano pepper, tomato and cheese. And yes I do make my own sometimes 💅 having homemade salsa prepped to put on top is a bonus but they really are amazing just as is.

Yogurt with tomatoes cucumbers and olive oil
•••
Most minimal version is cucumbers and good crackers/toast with yogurt with olive oil maybe just salt and pepper or if you have a good spice blend like zaatar or I make a rly bomb dukkah. If I have it I’ll add tomatoes, olives, maybe a little lemon zest, jam or herbs. I’m also a savory breakfast person always looking for quick prep options.

Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home
•••
This show is the best. Incredibly soothing and delightful, best music, themed, and sometimes julia and Jacques argue over like white pepper vs black pepper and it’s everything. One of my major comfort shows.

Carnitas
•••
You need a win and this is SO easy and so damn delicious. Freezes beautifully and can be used for many things but best in some simple tacos, I think. Could make your own tortillas and salsa to make it more of a project.

I don’t use recipes rly so this is a random one but basically treat it like crab meat and add old bay and binders and make a delicious sauce to dip. So bomb.

Micheladas 😩
•••
I went to a friends house recently in a terrible mood and was handed an icy savory and refreshing michelada and it truly restored me on a cellular and spiritual level. It’s a measure with your heart and to taste situation but here’s what I do: Get a big ass cup and fill with ice. Fill it like 3/4 up with a Mexican beer, I do modelo or corona. Add the juice of an entire juicy lime, few dashes maggi, little pour of soy sauce, little pour of Worcestershire sauce, dashes of Valentina, some tajin and black pepper and finish with a nice pour of Clamato juice to the top and maybe a little more ice. Drink and repeat.

I don’t know what it is about her but I looooove this girls drink videos on YouTube. She has really inspired me to batch cute drinks for myself as a way to celebrate and endure summer in Atlanta. I can’t do caffeine really so I use decaf tea! This is her watermelon mint green tea.

Black Bean Tostadas
•••
These are fresh, customizable and absolutely delicious. I make my own tostadas (bake in oven) and cook my rancho gordo black beans from scratch and then cook with lots of onion and oil or bacon grease to refry but you could use store bought for both! Serve with lots of toppings, radish, avocado, sour cream, lettuce, lime, jalapeños, etc etc. They are so fresh and satisfying.
