5 Forms of U.S. Currency That Are No Longer in Use
•••
Quick but interesting little piece on some of the history of money in the United States. Very informative for my work as I am currently working with more modern coins and the imagery that lives on them. This knowledge makes me want to expand more and start using “dead” currency.

Low Life by Luc Sante
•••
A powerful and influential book. This non-fiction work details the dark side of city life between 1840-1919, exposing the flaws within our society, while highlighting what has changed versus what has not. The book is a strong juxtaposition to other books about New York during the Gilded Age that spoke about wealthy people, emphasizing the stories that have not been told and have been hidden from sight.

The 21st Century's Biggest Art Trend
•••
This article really helped me to understand my own work and where I lay within the contemporary discourse of art as I am working with conceptual systems of control. This article is important in thinking about and understanding the post-Cold War world and how we have shifted to describing many different social phenomenons in terms of systems.

The Art Thief by Michael Finkel
•••
“The Art Thief” is an incredibly told story written by Michael Finkel. This book details one of the largest art thefts in history as a couple stole over 200 works from different museums across Europe. It is a harrowing tale of love, betrayal, and obsession with art. This book encapsulated me as a lover of art can truly understand the thief’s perspective.

The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss
•••
This is a great art book that shows Dr. Seuss’s midnight paintings. These works were never shown during his life, and were only published after his death by his wife. These works and this book as been formative for me as an artist and my voice, as it shows true vulnerability and style. I admire Dr. Seuss for his world-building skills, as well as his ability to create a persona. These are two goals I strive for in every work I make as my voice continues to develop.

Down Below (Leonora Carrington)
•••
This was an important book for me as someone interested in Surrealism, mad studies, and the historiography of how women have been treated in art. It is autobiographical and gives insight into her experiences in institutionalization alongside how her Surrealist painting ideas developed. I am interested in mad studies as psychiatry and institutions have a history of acting as a system of control that continues to bleed into the present state of our world.
