Injustice Case by David Hammons, 1970
•••
Powerful work by David Hammons. Hammons use of the flag and body prints is in heavy conversation with my current work and process as his themes are once again relevant. While this work doesn’t highlight his humor much, his other artworks do, and I have learned from him that it is important as an artist to use humor to convey hard and provocative ideas.

Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash (1912)
•••
Another iconic Italian Futurist painting that I was surprised to learn is located at the Buffalo AKG! This painting by Giacomo Balla highlights motion in an almost mechanical way, showing the importance of layers in painting. This was an important skill for me to learn with my own work, and it helped me to create more dynamic compositions.

Dynamic Hieroglyphic of the Bal Tabarin
•••
One of my favorite paintings from one of my favorite movements, Italian Futurism. “Dynamic Hieroglyphic of the Bal Tabarin” by Gino Severini was painted in 1912. Paintings of this movement focus on movement, chaos, and technology. This was created during the larger Modernist period, but it does not completely fulfill the modernist critique under the lens of prominent writers such as Krauss and Greenberg as it has a subject, a dance scene, and includes other materials than just paint such as rhinestones.

The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss
•••
This is a great art book that shows Dr. Seuss’s midnight paintings. These works were never shown during his life, and were only published after his death by his wife. These works and this book as been formative for me as an artist and my voice, as it shows true vulnerability and style. I admire Dr. Seuss for his world-building skills, as well as his ability to create a persona. These are two goals I strive for in every work I make as my voice continues to develop.

Lick and Lather by Janine Antoni
•••
These sculptural works are chocolate casts of the artist herself in the form of classical busts. Her use of chocolate is odd, but highlights impermanence, juxtaposing the permanent nature we assume busts have. These works are important to my work as I am interested in chocolate as a representative medium of systems of illusionistic control. These works are revolutionary and inspiring, and chocolate as a fine art medium is something that I believe is worth pursuing, even if that work becomes non-archival.

Artist Friendships: Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo
•••
These are two female artist’s whose work has really resonated with me. I never knew they were friends! They met in Paris, and both ended up fleeing to Mexico where they became close friends. Now understanding this context, I am able to see connections in their art, looking at their bodies of work individually versus together. Their work is important in the historiography of surrealism as it was a movement that excluded women. These two women successfully were able to break into it, creating significant and transient works. This relationship is a reminder of how important it is to build friendships with other artists along the way. Nobody will understand your struggles like another artist.

Navigating Homesickness through Sculpture (Do Ho Suh)
•••
I am Inspired by Do Ho Suh and his use of technique with rubbings. I appreciate the way he builds complex narratives. He has been an important figure in my research of mixed media techniques and the importance of detail and objectivity without directly displaying the object itself.

The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli
•••
This painting from 1781 was recommended to me by an undergrad professor, and it kickstarted my journey as a fine artist as I had previously been focused on children’s illustration. This painting got me thinking about the subconscious and how events and fears from our waking lives can overflow into every aspect of our beings. It made me think about what factors influence our daily lives, and what stays with us even when we are not consciously aware.
