Making yourself a seasonal menu
•••
I do this for work and give my postpartum clients my menu so they can choose what I cook for them, but it’s help my home cooking too. Cooking 3 meals a day for your family EVERYDAY?! It’s beyond comprehension. But having a little seasonal menu of ideas for things to cook, snacks included can be so helpful!! (Work contact scratched out haha)

Throwing a frisbee back and forth!
•••
My honey and I always have a frisbee in the car to throw around at a park or the beach and it’s so fun! You’re outside, laughing, and moving around. Doesn’t matter if you have good aim or not!

Summer sheet tray for ripening fruit
•••
Ever had peaches mold before they ripen??? No more! Also great if you’re picking tomatoes at or around “first blush” to let them finish ripening inside. Once the fruit ripens it will entice you like sirens singing to you, and you’ll smell them before you need to squeeze and bruise them.

Attending local community events
•••
Look at posters people hang up and see what's going on in your town! Then the key part, PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDAR AND ACTUALLY GO. There is endless joy in meeting your neighbors and getting to be a part of the fun. Often these events are cheap/free and worth their weight in gold. Pictured here is the bike decorating station for a parade in our little town this morning.

Pre-Grocery Reset
•••
Nobody likes spending $$$ on groceries and nobody likes throwing away food! Here comes the pre-shop reset. Before you make your grocery list, right when things start feel almost bare and undesirable in the fridge you need to do a reset. The KEY is to do it during the time you plan to cook dinner and do an EASY but delicious dinner because the reset will take time and make lots of dishes so you don’t want dinner to also do that. Take everything out of the fridge that’s looking floppy, sad, and even a bit moldy and put it on the counter. Take stock of what’s salvageable, what’s compost, and what needs a little imagination. Today that was turning sad herbs, and a last couple anchovies and capers into an Italian salsa verde, very pathetic rhubarb into compote, parm that was poorly stored into the food processor to make it crumbled and ready to be used with abandon (rather that the hard and sort of moldy situation it had been), a couple potatoes that were not their best anymore cooked in the instant pot, then a pot of beans! Also prepped celery and carrots and plopped them in water so they perk up and are easy to eat as well as washing and spinning greens so they are salad ready. Tomorrow I will feel like there’s lots of food to eat! And tonight we had an easy zhuzhed up jarred pasta sauce on penne and salad. The fridge and our minds are ready for making a grocery list and very little had to go into the compost.

Getting in over your head

Starting a project before you feel like you have all the information and skills necessary is really refreshing. But also, that’s how you end up with a live trapped groundhog while your husband is out of town.

Secondhand manifestation list
•••
Growing up my grandmother would ask if we had anything we wanted to add to her "list". This list was for anything we wanted/needed and she would keep an eye out at garage sales, flea market, or thrift shops. Sometimes she would find it in six months or sometimes the next week. If you have a little patience and keep an eye out you can save so much money!!! Yesterday we found a $275 balance bike for our toddler for $3!! I called my grandma to ask if she could find me an egg slicer. I don't ~need~ one so it feels silly to order one.. but a vintage secondhand one? Of course.

Just Add Water
•••
One of those life tips that I heard somewhere (Maybe Cup of Jo?) and it changed my perspective. This applies to a shower, cup of cold water to drink, or going for a swim, etc! When life is feeling a little spun out or you're just feeling overwhelmed Just Add Water! Works especially amazing for parenting as well!!!!

The Goodwill Bins
•••
You guys. The goodwill outlets are my heaven on earth. I have found Le Creuset, new shoes, vintage everything, all the wine glasses for our wedding, oh AND my wedding dress???? I went today and got a trunk full of treasures for under $23 including a new sprinkler I needed, a very old hand stitched small quilt, new winter boots, a vintage frilly Christmas dress for my toddler, great books, a pedestal ceramic bowl thing, a basket, a lamp, cork board, etc etc etc. Some (including my husband) find it gross and overwhelming! There are signs up that say "wear gloves for your safety"! There are TREASURES everywhere!

Having a set of blank cards on hand
$5
•••
Make a doodle on the front to give more of a birthday or thank you or congratulations vibes, but having a multicolored pack on hand takes away a barrier to just SENDING THE CARD. Even if it's late! I'm about to go downstairs and write a thank you note to my grandma after I publish this..

Using the collage function on Pinterest
•••
I made mood boards, Christmas list gift vibes, and all of our party invites! You can use any pin or photo in your library. I made this one when I was going into my third trimester pregnant in winter. The background was a photo I took and everything else were pins in my own boards or ones I searched for during the collage process. I had made collages of my friends pets as line cooks, birthday gifts of all someone's favorites things etc etc etc

Having the patience to let the peaches ripen on the counter
•••
Get the peaches from the store even if they are rock hard. They will reward you with their intoxicating smell while you sit at the table for breakfast to tell you they are ripe and ready. Eat one over the sink and let yourself get messy and fully committed to the experience.

You can sign up to review books before they get published. I have already read through a few cookbooks from people I adore and tested recipes. Cannot wait to post my reviews when they come out. Cookbooks are my favorite so that has been my main focus on reviewing but there is every genre available!

Coffee, Bed, Book, Pages: My Anti-Rot Morning
•••
"I read a few pages of a book and then do very serious–unserious morning pages in bed—one to three pages, postcard-to-a-friend style about what I did yesterday, what I’m doing today, what the weather’s doing, where my dog is." Reading this was HUGE for me. I got so stuck in the whole idea of -writing- instead of actually writing a single word, but a few pages of what I use to call "journaling" and it doesn't need to profound or even interesting. Just pen on paper, and it makes me feel like I'm starting my day with something valuable.

Actually watching, listening, and reading what your friends recommend to you!

So often my friends say, “you have to read this!” And I say, “absolutely, I will!” And I have spent a long time… not actually doing it! But people have good recommendations that are worth your time. Part of why I love it here 💗

If you have time in portland to sauna the Washington Baths are life changing and wonderful and have a delicious food menu too. The Post Supply and Onggi down the road from sauna also for shopping. Nightmoves and tandem for baked goods. Midcoast is Cafe Grazie (emphasis on Cafe Grazie, it’s a must), Sammy’s Deluxe, Luce Spirits, Chase’s Daily, Long Grain for eating! Shopping in midcoast is great at Curator and Little Fox for consigned adult and kids clothing. Fog Wine for wine. And yes to Mcloon’s for Lobster Rolls! Best in town. Tinderhearth up by Acadia is excellent!

As a younger person (27) but a very tired mom of a young daughter, reading about aging from someone so wonderful has me hopeful and excited about what sort of life is ahead of me as far as “beauty” goes and how I can talk about aging to my daughter when that time comes.
