Casa Cieno in Puerto Escondido
•••
Currently sitting at the airport after a quick getaway to this incredible beach house on the Oaxacan coast. It’s an Airbnb, but more like a private hotel because there’s a staff to greet you and get you situated, and you can book an excellent chef for all meals (highly recommend). The house itself and the area is a design- and nature-lover’s paradise. Tropical brutalist indoor/outdoor living (including outdoor showers!) in a remote, wild part of the coast north of Puerto Escondido. It’s near Casa Wabi, an artist residency and foundation with galleries and a sculpture garden that’s also worth a visit. All the surrounding houses and hotels have a similar designy bent. Sleeps 4, comfy beds, gorgeous landscape, refreshing pool, amazing night sky, so many birds and diverse plants, not for young kids. A true escape!

Wuppertal
•••
I’ve never been, but high on my travel wishlist: Go see a Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch performance at their home theater (if timing works out, Rite of Spring and Vollmond are must-sees), and more kid-friendly: ride the very cool hanging trains, go to the zoo, explore museums and green spaces. And apparently there’s a big trampoline park. Something for everyone!

UNAM/Ciudad Universitaria
•••
The huge public university’s campus in the south of the city and a UNESCO world heritage site. Home to some phenomenal modernist architecture and murals from the likes of Diego Rivera and Juan O’Gorman, it also has a very cool contemporary art museum (MUAC), a brutalist sculpture garden (near MUAC), a botanic garden, and plenty more to explore. It's MASSIVE, so I would take an uber or cab there, even though you can take the subway, but it's a bit of a schlepp from the closest stop.

Hotel Simple Patagonia
•••
Favorite hotel, hands down. Worth traveling to the end of the world for. Its location at the end of the world helps too. Perfect stop pre- and post-W Trail trek (or other Patagonia explorations).
