Superette
•••
The cutest French cafe/bar/market/wine shop that I’m lucky to call my neighborhood spot. The entire menu and staff are excellent, as are the indoor vibes (retro, pastel, often packed), but absolutely nothing beats sitting at an outdoor table on a summer evening and ordering another carafe of wine (or their A+ soft serve!) as another friend inevitably joins your group. Squint and you could be in a very hip European village. Bonus: they’re showing all World Cup games!

Philly Phlush

Perhaps an unlikely rec, but I’ve been raving about it ever since I used it (the Clark Park one, specifically) weeks ago. Clean, well-designed, good ventilation, with feminine products and narcan available, a changing table, and a very satisfying hand sanitizer dispenser. There are currently only 3 in Philly, but here’s to more public toilets across parks and neighborhoods in all cities!

TOAST
•••
The new TOAST store on Locust is the only one in the US where you can shop the archive (everything is 30-70% off), and it makes up over half the store. Bonus: the staff are so friendly and helpful!

THE best ice cream. Fight me. Favorite flavors: lemon with blueberry basil swirl, keylime pie, cold brew with cacao nibs, double vanilla, vegan mango sticky rice

Woman-owned curated hardware store in a cage at the Bok Building. Online too! Great for gifts and also fixing things, and offers hands-on workshops like how to caulk or use power tools.

Mawn

On the top of every Philly restaurant list, and for good reason. Not only is the food (a spin on Cambodian classics) next level, but the owners are the nicest, realest people in the biz, and the entire staff is so welcoming. Worth standing in the long lunch line for or attempting a walk in (bc good luck getting a reservation!).

I’ve never been to Portugal, but this is my platonic ideal of a Portuguese neighborhood bar. Cozy, A+ cocktail menu, yummy snacks (meat ‘n’ chips!), self-serve seltzer tap, outdoor seating for warm summer nights, and the cutest dang fish logo.

Second District Brewing

The beer is good, the beer descriptions even better, but the food is the sleeper hit here. Get the Danish Dog or the Vada Pav.

FDR Park

So much to love, and something for truly everybody: the most epic playground in the city, South Asian and Latin American food markets on weekends, free kayaking, serious skate park and soccer fields, tennis courts, sauna pop-up and terrifying sledding hills in the winter, accessible via the Broad Street Line.

Chanticleer, a pleasure garden
•••
A magical place. The most beautiful and wild of the Philly area’s many beautiful gardens. The staff craft whimsical bridges and furniture in the winter like little elves (garden gnomes?). Reserve parking in advance and pack a picnic.
