La Chimera
•••
is director Alice Rohrwacher's 2023 masterpiece about the way we long and search in the landscape after we have lost someone we love. What belongs to the living and what belongs to the dead? I love how she uses light and space in every shot. I saw this in theaters with the guy I was dating at the time; at the end of the movie, I was almost in tears but he didn't like it and that's how I knew it would soon be over between us.

"Our Hobby is Depeche Mode"
•••
Perhaps my favorite documentary of all time. Artist Jeremy Deller and filmmaker Nicholas Abrahams' 2007 film celebrates the devotion of Depeche Mode's fans, especially those who were formerly behind the iron curtain or in Iran.

Koyaanisqatsi
•••
is director Godfrey Reggio's 1982 non-narrative documentary with a phenomenal score by Philip Glass. It takes us from pre-historic cave drawings through car manufacturing assembly lines in the late 70s/early 80s. "Koyaanisqatsi" translates roughly to "a life out of balance." It's interesting to watch with 2026 eyes.

The opening scene of "Pride and Prejudice" (2005)
•••
The whole movie is literally perfect but I think about the beginning sequence all the time. We see Lizzie walking through the yard to get home, and we see the lives of all her sisters playing out, and we see her watching her parents through the window, and we see everyone else working on their jobs/chores/interests. It reminds us that indoors and outdoors are happening at the same time.
