Last and First Men (2021)
•••
More A/V essay than movie, Last and First Men challenges, mesmerizes, unsettles. Humanoid inhabitants of a a far-future Earth on the brink of extinction reach back to tell us the story of our species’ many incarnations. Tilda Swinton’s disembodied narration layered over black-and-white footage of former Yugoslavia’s brutalist spomenik sculptures and Jóhann Jóhannson‘s haunting soundscapes demand meditation: on human nature, evolution and extinction, time’s unfathomable depths, and the meaning of existence.

Between this, Hexus from Ferngully, and Cardinal Richelieu from The Three Musketeers, Tim Curry’s ambiguously horny villains had my developing brain in a chokehold in the early 90s

100 Years of Solitude
•••
In the enshittified year of our lord 2024, I had low hopes for this Netflix adaptation of Marquez’s (famously “unfilmable”) 1967 magical realism masterpiece. But damn, they really came through on this one. Flawless casting, sumptuous set design, perfect pacing, tastefully understated practical effects. A wonderful tribute to one of the great novels of history.
