Familiarity (Punch Brothers)
•••
The 10-minute centerpiece of their concept album Phosphorescent Blues, “Familiarity” is more thesis than song — and feels complete in a way that would border on esoteric if it weren’t also so profoundly poignant. Divided into movements, the song moves dynamically through shifting time signatures, unorthodox chord modulations, and lush vocal harmonies. I’ve listened to it a million times and still get full-body goosebumps. True masterpiece.

The Hours (Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Philip Glass)
•••
Shimmering, moody piano and strings that fugues upon itself, each track a slightly different lens though which to view the theme — perfect for writing to.

“I Walk on Gilded Splinters” (Dr. John)
•••
The hypnotic closing song of Dr. John’s 1968 debut album Gris-Gris is a swampy seven-minute psychedelic voodoo masterpiece I can listen to on repeat. Headphones are a must for the amazing spatial audio.

WFMU Radio
•••
America’s longest-running freeform independent radio station, New Jersey’s WFMU gives volunteer DJs total control over their wildly eclectic playlists without any corporate or algorithmic interference. Broadcasts mix rare genres, from vintage wax cylinders and field recordings to punk rock, arcane gospel, niche international music, sound art, and obscure comedy. Truly independent, the station refuses corporate funding, commercials, and financing or content major public networks like NPR, relying strictly on listener support. Listen at 91.1 fm in New York, at 90.1 fm in the Hudson Valley, online or in their excellent app (TONS of amazing archive content).

Unraveling Bolero (Radiolab)

An exploration of parallel cases where bursts of obsessive, transmodal creativity were the first signs of frontotemporal dementia. You’ll never listen to Maurice Ravel’s Boléro the same way again.

The TANK (Center for Sonic Arts)
•••
When a couple of kids in Rangely, CO broke into an abandoned water cistern, they were expecting graffiti and empty beer bottles — not a one-of-a-kind acoustic marvel. The precise parabolic architecture of the reservoir’s bare steel walls produce an uncannily resonant “sonic bloom” — transforming simple notes into lush, ethereal, cathedral-like omnidirectional soundscapes that swirl and sustain resonance for forty seconds or more after the note ends — twice as long as the Taj Mahal’s famous 240-foot echo chamber. Now a sonic laboratory, performance space, and recording studio, the TANK hosts wonderful artists and listening events, can be booked for private recording sessions, and has free open hours on Saturdays May–November for the acoustically curious. Example of the TANK’s otherworldly reverb: https://insighttimer.com/sherryfinzer/video-guided-meditations/ancient-roots
